I'm looking at buying a HU, and I am quite impressed with the Alpine 9807. As i'm new to car audio, and SQ, I am wanting to ask a few questions.
How does this HU go with SQ?
How much extra will I have to pay for a HU that will give me a noticable increase in SQ?
What else is there in the Alpine 9807's price range?

haven't heard a 9807 so can't comment on it, but from alpine's in the past around that price range, there shouldn't be much difference, so it would be fine for SQ
how much would you need to spend for a noticable increase in SQ?
a lot more, something with a better cd transport and dac would give the biggest benefits. time alignment and all that can help, but if the gear is installed correctly and tuned right, then it probably won't be a huge benefit.

Most Alpine HU's can be used for SQ, they make very high quality HU's.
With SQ, the more you spend the better the product will be, but there is a point where the price increase is so big for a small improvement in quality that it becomes hard to justify spending the money.

Well the 9807 just makes it into my budget (starting from scratch here). So ya recon that I will have to spend quite a bit more (considering this unit is $400-$500) to get better SQ?

I think that HU will be perfect for a beginner SQ system.
In all seriousness, $500 will get you a really nice HU, and if you are keen on Alpine you can't go wrong.
If you need any product catalogues etc on Alpine products, or further info etc feel free to PM me.
