For those dollars I would be suggesting some Hertz HSK's for the splits. I wouldn't worry about 6x9's for the rear fill, just go a decent pair of 2 way 6.5" coaxials. I think that the HSK's retail for about $330 (don't shoot me if I'm wrong) and then about $150 for the rear fill should be adequate. Look at Alpine or Hertz for your rear fill!
You could maybe look at some second hard wares, there are plenty of good quality components to be had out there, but if you are after new, SQ orientated goods, then this is the best value that I can come up with for now!
How much power and you feeding the splits?
Cheers...Mitch

If ya need speakers and an amp for $500, I would ignor the rears for now. Get some Hertz HSK's or simular (remember, splits are your choice when it really comes down to it) and pick up a nice second hand amp.
In the future, get a sub and if ya choose your amp correctly now, it should be able to power the sub aswell. I like the Hertz 12" sub in a sealed box, and it really pumps with even as little as 150wrms and less powering it. Pick up some Hertz coax's as rear fill, any size should do (I'm presuming their coax's are very simular to their splits?).
