What type of car is it for?

Take at look at the new DD 9100, it might be what you're looking for.

Boston PRO 12s are also a nice sub if you have limited enclosure space.

Phil,

This may interest you...I have owned 2 Boston Pro 12" subs for about 2 years now, and have just been playing around with one of them in different size boxes.

As you probably know, Boston recommend 28Lt per sub. I would love to know how the hell they came up with this figure!!

I have tried one sub in 28Lt, 42Lt, 60Lt, 70Lt, and 80Lt boxes, and would you believe that it sounded far far better in the 70Lt box - and sounded the WORST BY A MILE in the 28Lt recommended box. Infact, I'd say awful in 28Lt.

Go figure.

its for my rex my99, when we say 28lt or 70lt, how 2 measure them? i mean in H x W x L cm?

and DD - digital design?

how much r the sub? and u reckon 12" is the good choice for me?

15" Free Air is a damn good setup that isn't used anywhere near enough for Sound Quality these days

Are you talking about 12.5s? What type of car is it in?

Zoent:

It doesn't matter what the dimensions are, it's the volume of the box that counts.

Phil:

I was using the 12.5LF Boston Pro 12" subs - the car was a excel.

Any thoughts on why such a larger box over than what the manufacturer recommends sounded 1000 times better? And all boxes have been properly built and sealed etc.

Even when I tried one in my bedroom, again in a 70Lt box - the results were far far better than either 28Lt or 42Lt!

Got me stumped!

Two 12's in that car would sound good. The only problem with free-air is that you don't get bottom end like a sealed or ported box. If you like to occasionally listen to very bass-heavy tracks forget free-air. I'd go for two 12's in a sealed box.
Mr_Bob
the reason for that is the manufacturer's recommendations are often "fudged".
people don't want a sub that requires a 70L box, they want subs that fit in small boxes, so the manufacturers recommend small boxes.
also, it'll be harder for the sub to hit maximum excursion in a small box, so it's "safer" for he manufacturer to recommend small boxes.

i wouldn't get a DD they sound crap.
phil's just trying to make money from you.
you'll also need craploads of power to get the most from it.

something like an a/d/s might interest you
or an IDMAX
do for 12" it's a good "inbetween"

$1000 for a subs - thats a killer budget.

My first question would be what amp do you have to run this sub if any? How much power, does it need to be one brand etc?

For me personally I always go for one killer 12" sub as my standard for SQ. I now have an a/d/s 312rs.2 which is an absolutely delicious sub. You can't get them anymore in Australia (unless secondhand) or maybe if you tell me by friday morning (you have my mobile #). An awesome sub works well in small enclosures (confirmed by AZ trading's a/d/s Volvo - two 312rs.2) and can handle around 1000w RMS. I am only recommending these subs becoz I have heard them and not just read about them.

Other subs I would recommend you look at would be the JL Audio W7's but that is purely on word of mouth and reviews not first hand experience . The IDMax subs also get my nod of approval.

hope this helps

HAHAHAHA W7 looks awesome but I seriously doubt it I can get it on my budget, just top from my head i think they cost more than $1500 for 12"

let me hear your car bmw_xtc when we meet up, trying to find the time to get the changer out from the car and my Alpine CDA 7998 coming this saturday!

serious? i thought ppl ditched the free air idea as was thought to be "Sh!t" and dodgy. would havin 15's sound deeper than 12's? my mate has 2x pioneer chequer plate 12's free aired and top of range 2way coax's (all about 3 years old now) and his system sounds sweet! not deep enough for my liking tho.
