I cant decide which sub i prefer. I have narrowed it down to the Alpine type R 12inch and the 12 inch JL w3v2. Im also open to offers. Looking for SQ and sub around the same price as these two. thanks for your help.
ADDED: Kicker comp VR can be had for a bit cheaper. I take it they arent as good but let me know.

I've also heard the digital designs 2012 sub getting raved about for a more considerate price, perhaps give this one a listen too?

I would go the Alpine.
I have had mine now for nearly 3 years, and they have had the biggest flogging a sub can have. And they are still good today.
But that is just me,

Definately the JL's.
I have had friends upgrade from the Type R's to the JL's, as they do sound alot better.
Cheers fellas...you got something figured out there i get one vote for the JL then one for the Alpine then one for the JL and so on...LOL

their a little cheaper, dont handle as much power either, V2 supposedly sound better
would a Kicker comp VR 12inch round sub compare to these for SQ? what kicker subs would? also what does the tantrum rate?

I'd definately take the JL 12W3v2's.
I've owned a trio of CompVR 15"s and while they went loud, they didnt sound good doing it.
I owned a JL 12W3 (1st series) and it was great. Went loud, handled heaps of power and just couldnt get the thing to sound bad.
I was deiciding between the 3 you are now before I got my Kickers, and the only reason I got them was price. 3 of any 15" sub dont come cheap, even more so with alpine and jl!

w3v1 v v2 - no more extruding dust cone, slightly increased power handling, i assume that the t/s specs have now changed.....havent heard the v2 though (i own a v1 still)....pretty good sub, goes plenty loud enough for daily driving off 240wrms (coustic 480qe...nothing on the other channels atm)
i never really liked alpine subs that much though...hated my old type S i'll admit

I used to own a JL 12W3v2. That would be my vote cos that thing went HARD without distortion to volumes higher than I'd ever need. It was noticeable better than the 12 inch Comp VR. Haven't heard the Alpines...
There were only two subs out there that I considered to replace my old W3v2...and they were the JL W6v2 and the W7.
JL Audio Rocks!
