Hi

ive found what i believe to be a bug with the audio processing of this unit.

when the Crossover is activated and media expander is on im getting strange pops and churps in the sound. kinda sounds like a badly downloaded/encoded mp3 when it skips around and pops.

now this is happening when playing mp3s and im sure when im playing audio cd's. either turn off media expander or the crossover and it doesnt do it anymore.

kinda noying and it sounds really bad. is there such a thing as firmware updates which could be flashed to fix the problem ? any advice / things to test further ?

thanks

i had a similar problem with my HU 7969R. It use to scatch or pop with music if the HU's 7band eq didnt have its 63hz setting above +2. I returnd it and it was a known fault. The HU was replaced and i havent had the problem again.

I think the 7998 has a completly diffrent internal procesing unit to the 7969R (although they are both phantom face + preamp only units)

I get the 'pop' sound as well when i play my mp3 cd's but with normal audio cd no problem at all and my player only 3 weeks old, Initialy I thought it was bad recording.....hmm....

just out of curiousity, how much is it retailing here 7998R?

Theres a few bugs with the 7998R, I've had mine replaced twice so far. Pretty shoddy for a deck that retails for $1800.
Blitz
what other bugs have you found ? and will they replace the deck or take it away and repair it ?
zoent2
yea what other bugs?
Blitz
truined ??

called up the place of purchase and of course the guy over the phone had no idea what i was talking about, but it just gonna get sent straight off and ill have it back in about 2 weeks

Fix the bug by turning off the 'mx' (media expander) while you playing the mp3

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the whole point of MX was to work in conjunction to MP3's to increase the quality of MP3's. If he just turns it off then he is losing one of the major functions of the HU, something that he may have indeed bought the HU because it contained such a feature. It'd be like conceeding that there is a problem but doing nothing about it. Good to see that you have done something about it! Let us know if they find anything! Amazing for a unit that RRP's for $1800. What is going on at Alpine...

Cheers...Mitch

yeah thats what im doing, infact i rekon it sounds better with this off anyways

but still its a bug and while its still under warranty i want a deck 101% functioning as it should.

if i was to turn the crossover off and have media expander on it works fine to, soemthing about those 2 when both enabled.

media expander r crap, just boosting the frequency

im using the x-over and media expander off n works totally fine thou...

Well I have the same problem too. At first I thought it was poorly recorded MP3's but it was fine when i turned off the MX. I spoke to the guys at the local car audio store and they said it is a known problem.

Although I did speak to a tech at Alpine directly and he said he has never heard of it. Anyways, he did say that if it is then it would be covered under warranty and that they would look at it and fix it if i sent it back to them.

Looks like its time to rip out the head unit once again.
Blitz
well i still havent done anything about it yet for that reason. i dont use the Media Expander now but i have found the problem is only there when on level 3, level 1 and 2 i havent noticed it.
