I am currently running a system consisting of balupunkt san francisco head unit, dyns 240,zapco amps for the dyns, kicker s12l5 and a rockford amp running the sub. I am thinking of changing my sub to something higher quality. No offence, the kicker is good but i think it's more towards a spl. It isn't as tight as what i want it to be.
Therefore, i would like some recommendations of some good 12" subs that is towards sq. And something that would cost along the line of $400-1000.

If you're willing to go 2nd hand, have a look at a/d/s 312rs.2 currently on sale in the for sale section.
Check here They're awesome sq subs! I would've taken this if i haven't just bought an a/d/s r12s (which is a newer version of the 312rs.2). Good luck
PS: no, i don't have any connection with the seller

Boston PROs are a great sounding and impessive looking woofer. Also have a listen to a DD 2012, they sound similar and are a lot cheaper.

I am not a big fan of Boston but I can recommend you to go for Adire audio or IDMAX... I have heard both of them and they are so tight... My friend the one with the nickname [JOGER], he has a 15" adire brahma in ported box... each port is 10cm... and believe it or not its very very very tight...

I'm selling my Focal Polyglass 13" Sub in the FS section - it's one of the tightest subs I have heard. It retailed for around $650 I think - I paid about $600 for it. Had a relatively easy life in my SQ system.
[end free plug]
Otherwise - with your price range there are a lot to look at. Obviously the Focal range - Phoenix Gold Titaniums, IDMAX, and a whole lot more that I'm sure people will jump on and tell you to check out

Well IMO i think if u got the bling bling and the box/cabin space use a Kicker SoloX Peak Power handling 10,000 and 5,000 Wrms and sensitivity of 89 Db and they have done a SQ car with one of these subs and they killed em and got first place, which is good considering its a 18 inch sub, that weighs between 75-90 Pounds roughly 37-45 Kgs FAAAARRRRRKKK

actually yesterday i went to autobarn mile end to have a look at their jl range which they just got ... had a listen and though the 2 10w0 sound much better than the 2 12w3's ... it was more tighter and sounded better ... what are the secrets to getting tighter bass?? btw i asked how much it would cost to get 5 12w3's and the guy said 400 each ... i thought thats a bit pricey if u buy that much ... oh well ...

i was looking at them too, people are picking them up for around $350 and less in Victoria so may have to look into that

I would try a new box. i have no idea what box u have now, but the kicker squares do have good SQ.
Might be worth trying b4 you spend 500+ on a new subbie

The secret is, its all about your MIDBASS drivers and blending them in with your subwoofers, ie not having the sub bass too loud and not having a hole in the midbass response - you don't really want subwoofers that put out a lot of midbass (because that will drag your soundstage back to the subwoofer), you want your front stage to do it - this is why you see people with 8", 10" midbass drivers mounted at the front of their car. In most sound quality cars, the subwoofer is low passed very low, usually 50-60hz, making the front midbass speakers do a lot of work resulting in that bass up front effect, as well as tight punchy bass.

and a note to follow on form bassa,
Alot of the SQ cars these days use the subs for the spl section of the judging. Like Garry biggs who had solo Xs in his car. only there for the SPL section not used for SQ. They have 8-10" front stange or small subs in the dash for the lower bass.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUNG!
WRONG ANSWER.
The car you are thinking of has a L7 mounted in the footwell which is used for SQ. The pair SoloX's are only used for the SPL part of IASCA scoring and are turned off for RTA and SQ tests.

Well, I didn't know i would get so many replies. Making me dizzy thinking about it.Anyway,i have narrowed it down to what i may be getting. Either i get one 12" image dynamics sub or i get 2 medium 12" subs such as DD or type r or 2 10". Damn which one to choose, so many choices. Anyway if i am planning on going for sq i am not sure which one of these i should get. As the 12" image dynamic is damn nice but pretty expensive. 2 12" are moderately priced and they cover a wider area than one 12". Damn, have i missed anything....I am so confused.

The DD 2012 is an incredibly clean woofer, they only reason you really need to go up from there (say to a 3512) is if you want to run more than 500Wrms per sub.
The $349 2012 will take 500Wrms all day, the 3512 will take 1600W all day. Both have the same tight, controlled and dynamic SQ abilities. DD's parent company is famous in PRO-Audio applications such as recording studios and concert halls. Don't make the mistake of thinking DD woofers are SPL-Pigs. They are SQ woofers that also happen to be the world's loudest.

i heard a kicker solobaric l7 10" and was very unimpressed... sloppy sloppy bass.
if you're after a real SQ replacement woof, i'd be looking towards multiple dynaudios, a dig designs, adire audio brahma, peerless xls... xtant... velodyne...
then again it depends on what your idea of SQ is... cos from what i've read on here, everyone has a different idea.
audition some subs for yourself. get one to match your system.

haha yeah watch out for the sales BS
I love my Orion 2NT 12s for SQ because they play lower sealed than most good quality 15s and are extremely detailed. They need some heavy midbass to keep up with them though because they aren't very punchy. I am of the same opinion as Bassaholic and cross my subs at 50-60Hz with 8" midbass up front so I don't want a real punchy sub but it still needs a flat response for the frequency range it plays.

I'm trying to find a nice sub to match the sub channel on a Audison SRx3 ... thats 340W RMS at 2ohm...
I don't want something punchy, i just want some nice low bass... I don't want to spend an excessive amount of money though.
Is there anything that will suit my needs?
Thanks,
Tom.

Agree with you Stone...I've compared a Rockford HE2 to JLW3v2 (roughly the same level of sub?), and in my humble opinion, the JL $#17s all over the Rockford for SQ. To be honest, it $#!7 all over the Rockford in SPL too using the same amplifier on about 550wrms. The bass hit harder and lower on the JL (yes I was using the same settings on the head unit and the amp for the comparison).
Not bagging out anybody who likes the Rockford gear, they are not a bad sub at all...just that there's a lot of better stuff out there for similar amounts of money.
JL Audio (W3 or higher) gets my vote. I've mentioned many times, I don't think the W0's can cut the mustard...

Rockford subs are very much an SPL subs if you want SQ any of the fore mentioned brands are superior I reckon you cannot go past an IDMax if you can afford it these are awesome woofers anything else comparable will cost you twice or more as much.

Brahma isn't twice as much, but it is nowhere near as pretty as the IDMax

IMO go with 1 great sub rather than 2 good ones.
simpler, lighter, more boot space, better sq.
and with one great sub, if it isn't loud enuf, you can always get another one, if you've got 2 already what can you do? get 3? 4?
as mentioned before consider the IDMAX(~$800) or brahma(~$1000, correct me if i am wrong)
after having a brief listen in Mr_Bob's car, the brahma is definatly a very nice sub, this is coming from someone who owns an IDMAX.
personally i'd say if you had to choose between the two it would come down to your amp. if you had less than 1200rms and wanted to save ~$200 go with the IDMAX. if you had more(preferably a lot more) i'd go with the brahma.

Ive got an Elemental Designs 12A subwoofer. Many of you probably have not heard of them. So far so good, they have been compared to JLW7 and Brahmas and some have even gone as far as saying they outperform Brahmas..

Hehehe - sorry for the free plug - I've got a 13" Focal in a sealed box in the FS forums.
I loved it - it plays nice and tight - and definately low. A polyglass sub (13") in a 35l sealed box. Everyone that heard it was impressed.
The only reason I'm selling - need a sub that can handle 1500wrms
But for what you're after - I love the focals.

I run a Focal Poly Kevlar 33k 13" and it sounds great but I wouldn't recomend a sealed box for them, i'd go ported. Also a mate of mine has 3 IDmax's and they sound sweet
