Full Version: Midbass under seats?

Is this possible? would it drag the stage down?

Just trying to think of ways to get 8's in without using the doors...
ix
wouldn't it hurt?
It would be like having bass shakers under your seats
Bodyjar
Thats the idea, to feel it!

But we're talking midbass' here, they won't be highly powered to "hurt"...

This has been done before(believe it or not) by a friend i made in a US car audio forum. Here's his site: www.sounddomain.com/id/perryb

If you want to know how well this thing can be implemented i'd suggest giving him an email(he's really friendly and i'm sure will be happy to tell you more). His layout in terms of mid/tweet positioning is very unorthodox and unique but from what i've heard it does sound pretty good.

Cheers

Just go mono and build a fibreglass box for the passnegers foot well or something.

The 8's would only have to play up to 125hz so playing mono would be fine, theres not much difference between left and right channels below 125hz to justify going stereo.

honour77: Interesting stuff there... interesting indeed... thanks for that!

Indeed Cyberpunky (Head SQ judge) runs 8" midbasses under your legs (almost under the seat). and his sytem sounds great.
Bodyjar
Oh he does does he....

If the midbass driver was crossed rather high (say 500hz) and slightly behind you (when placed under the seat) would it not drag the image rearwards a little?
Bodyjar
Well thats what I was asking, will it?

And I would cross it off around 250-300hz...
XHELL
My 2c is - don't even . So much of your up front bass relies upon your mids, I wouldn't risk it.
Cyberpunky
OK well at midbass freqs below 800-900Hz, its all volume dependent, in that there are no timing cues. The louder speaker sounds nearer, which does give some scope for placement, but having never tried under seat Im not sure how well it would or wouldnt work.

In my car the midbasses are still fairly close to the rest of full range speakers. Anyway I guess that at worst, your bass would be far more forward, and solid with under seat, than not running midbass, but to say anything more would be speculating. Like most things, its probably worth a try, as if nothing else you will gain knowledge, and in my case, I didnt let the fact that no one else did it that way stop me

Thanks Punky, I'm gonna give it a shot soon...

bah just jam them in your kicks!
Bodyjar
My kicks are too small!
splbound
Why not just do the good old ... make pods for the 8's for the doors and then jam the smaller 6.5inchers into the kicks?? If they don't fit downsize the splits to say 5 1/4 or some good 4 inchers.

Or ditch the 8's and jam a strong set of 6.5in midbasses in the kicks?

How's the space under the dash? Maybe a pair of some fglassed pods with the midbasses facing down in under the dash?

Hell just give it a shot under the seats you never know until you try.... then give us the lowdown.
Bodyjar
I don't want to cut up my door cards... so fitting 8s under them could be a difficult task...

Glass enclosure under the dash will cause too many rattles to fix, I wanted them on the floor because its strong and less likely to rattle.

Putting anything bigger than a 4" in the kicks is not really possible, the drivers side kick is too close to the accelerator...
DD Phil
I've never put midbass under the seats, but I've built enclosures in the front floor and enclosures that run from the kicks to larger boxes under the seats. These were in a 1999 Integra and 1996 Civic, both used 9" Dynaudios.

There's pics on our site.
