For sq 2 brands always stand out from the pack,

Pffft..... never trust the guys at AutoBarn, I caught them out selling free air subs in boxes. Anyway get a Alpine CDA9807 ($580) or 9813 I think is also in that price range.
There are much better HU's than Pioneer for $800 price range.

Clarion is way up there in SQ amongst the other brands mentioned.
Alpine and Eclipse are great units but in my opinion they suffer a bit in the looks department (more so the Eclipse. The Alpine look is growing on me, if it weren't for that damn plastic).
But if image doesn't matter to you then it wont be an issue.

olbis.com.au have a good deal on focal splits for around your price range.
also i would have to agree with going for an alpine, sure it dosnt look 'all' that flash, but it makes it up in functionality and build quality
hth!

id ersonally spend 400 on a HU and 800 on splits.
But as for HU, the elclipse MP3, or alpine i guess but not a huge fan.
Splits look 2nd hand and find some dyns or focals or morels, and keep looking 2nd hand for a nice amp for the splits

hey....
thanx for the advice, i'm sorta leaning towards the Alpine HU's. But which one?
what are the main functional diffs b/w the CDA 9815, CDA 9813, CDA 9811 and CDA 9807.
is it a "major SQ affecting difference" or is it less important? ie. why am i paying more for the CDA 9815?
thanx

2 words why ur paying more: w@nk factor
9815 looks much nicer than the other Alpines IMO...
Get the 9815 if u got an $800 budget, cos it will be well within that. You wouldn't wanna be sitting there a few weeks down the track sulking about the few functions u missed out on now would u?
I know I've done that many a time in the past..

I too would be spending more on splits and less on HU, the CDA 9807 is a great HU, my friend has one and it has all the functions he wants, and i think I'd want. I'd be looking at the extra functions on the other Higher priced HUs and seeing if I'd use 'em before i went out and spent more money on a HU than $400 - 500. That's my opinion of course. I'm not into all the fancy schmancy functions, a basic HU wit MP3 and 2 preouts suits me fine.

the sony ES CDX-C90 will cain anything on todays market for around the $400 - you will have to find a S/H unit tho (eg. ebay), as they are no longer in production.

I, too, second the "reverse you budget" theory.
IMHO the front speakers are the most important part of your system.
