Full Version: Help - 1000w amp into 600w sub - will i smoke it

I recently purchased an a/d/s/ 312rs.2 which is a DVC 4ohm sub rated at 600w maximum. Now I just got back my xtant x1001 and it is rated at 500w @ 4ohm and 1000w @ 2Ohm.

If I wired down the sub down to 2Ohm then would I smoke it or are there things I can to do to prevent this from happening apart from setting the gains to zero?

Also if I wire the sub up to 8Ohm how much power would I be sending to the sub? Is it risky to run in this configuration for the sub and amp?

If neither of these options are desirable, recommended or worth it ... (speculating ) then could I get say Total Recoil to rebuild the sub so it can handle 1000w @ 2Ohm.

If I have absolutely no viable options or the SQ will be relatively comprimised then I will consider buying a second sub. But I really don't want to do this for a variety of reasons - space and practicallity being at the top.

Should be fine. The amp will only do 1000w or its maximum at highest signal voltage. The signal voltage increases exponentially as you increase the number of dials on the volume knob- hence getting louder.

I don't imagine there would be any problems. Wait for the general consensus though

if the gains are kept down and the volume used sensibly it should be ok.

At 8oms the sub will get roughly 250 -300 watts me'thinks... wich is pretty decent power for the 312.

Will you smoke it?? Short answer..no Long answer don't worry about what the amp can produce at it's amximum RMS value. When you start turning the gains on the amp up you will start to hear the sub distort, back it off and it will run all day every day. As for running at 2ohm?? See as this is in the SQ section it is better to run subs at 4 or 8 ohm then 1 or 2 for sq. Your amp gives a better dampening factor and it just sounds better. Try it yourself!

thanks guys for the replies...

first of all Mick007 I always thought it was better to get lower impedance for more power and better damping - don't know why I thought that but thanks for showing me the light. So if 4 or 8 Ohms is better for SQ then I will wire the sub at 8 Ohms if is getting roughly 250-300w RMS and I will get better bass response.

Must test it out ASAP. I can't believe I didn't know this - but then that is why I come CAA.

sweet thanks guys

Damping factor @ 2 ohms wont be an issues with that amp period. As for too much power, well unless you play 1KHz test tones(sine waves) then if gains set to output voltage of HU thenthis wont be an issues either. If you have a 4V HU then set gains at 4 V if 2 V then set gains for 2 V. If you do this then you wont have any issues, and assuming your set up is aimed at SQ then maxing sub out wont be an issue as to go close to breaking point of sub you would be deaf before you got close.

Anyway I use a 2 ohm load and havent been beaten in pro class SQ so doubt DF would be an issue with your system, and certainly wouldnt think of running 8 ohm load. Use discrestion with Volume and you will not only not blow sub but will keep your hearing longer. With your power and sub, you should get rediculous amounts of output, and still be well below over extending sub provided gains are set close to optimal.

thanks cyberpunky

I am going to get an expert (GL Pro Sound) do set this up for me because I am not confident with achieving the perfect balance myself considering the risks. I

am aiming for top SQ with this system. Because I couldn't put three ways in my car I need this sub to provide the neccesary bottom end with out being overbearing. I can only listened to a sub at loud volumes for a very short time (1 song at most - usually on for Jessica Simpson Sososdef Remixed Song). Anyway ... off track.

I have a Nak CD400 and the sub controller has volume control from -10 to 10. I just need to make sure I understand the breaking points of the sub and learn how to use it properly without damaging my system.
