Hey guys, I am thinking of getting a second hand Nakamichi CD700 Head unit in place of my current head unit which is the DEH 9450 pioneer.

Is there a huge difference in terms of SQ? and was wordering if i should go ahead with the offer of getting it as my Pioneer deck is only 2 months old and the CD700 is about 1 year old. But it is pretty irrisistable. As i heard its an awsome unit.

Anyway, i just wanna know how much is it to get the CD 700 brand new. And will there be a huge difference in SQ when that is placed in my car compared to the pioneer.

Cheers,
Joa

The last one I sold went for about $3,500 although this was a few years ago now...

whilst i have not auditioned the nak, i would NOT expect a huge difference in SQ.

like many things, it's a process of diminishing returns as you go up the scale. that is, any gains in SQ you get become smaller and smaller as you get better and better equipment. but of course it doesn't correlate to price!

so whilst you would expect the nak to sound better, it may not be 'whoa', in ya face. then again, it may.

there are a couple other important SQ things to consider:
*the remainder of your stereo: if for example you have only 'average' speakers, then no improvement in your source will improve overall SQ; same may go for the quality of your installation
*processing: have a listen to you pioneer with all EQ settings 'flat'; then decide how much you rely on them for the SQ you prefer, because the nak will probably lack a lot of the processing features your pioneer has; and in the end, if you end up having to add an external processor to 'fix' it up again...what's the point

however, if you're building (or have) a very high-end, 'revealing' system, then upgrading to something like the nak could be an awesome step to take.

good luck

Guys,

We recently built an Audi TT Quattro (cover car - Incar Magazine) and in the story the car used a new CD 400 Nakamichi, however after the shoot, the customer upgraded to a Nak CD 700 MKII. Honestly, when discussing with the customer about the upgrade, I was very cautious in getting his expectations up, I knew it would sound better but how much better I couldn't promise. However, after the swap, I was amazed at the difference. Musicality was definately better, it was definately livelier and the stage widened. Now this is from a car with a pretty good stage already when it had the CD 400. So do I think it was worth the money? Well if you have an excellent system already and all your signal cable is up to scratch, then certainly I think it is worth the money. Bare in mind though that this was the Mk II so it may be an improvement over the original CD 700.

Just my 2.2c worth...

thanx guys for your feed back. I hope the whole setup will sound awesome.

I've got Dyn 240GT splits an xtant 604x amp and running 2 JL subs.

cheers,

then i would expect you'll gain some improved SQ.

good luck.

Put it this way, if you don't buy it I will

As if you compare CD700 to 9450 I would say it will be a big step ahead in term of SQ. BB 24/96 DAC (pcm1704k) VS somesort of 1 bit D/A in the 9450 sure the nak will sound better. I had the NAK cd-700 (old version)before the only HU that could beat it are DCT-Z1 and the old Alpine 7909 witha lot of modification (ceramic CD spindle mechanism and 24/192 D/A upgrade) it is one of the best in the market. but sure it does look ugly.

At the end of the day. What you choose is up to you.

NAK cd-700= absolute best in SQ but look crap OR

Pioneer 9450 = a pot load of functions and very fancy graphic display but didn't have the sound you pay for!!!!!

I decided not to get the CD700 as yet. =)I'm pretty contented with the 9450 i have for now. Will go back to Singapore to have a look at the CD 700 & the CD 700II cos they are half the price back there compared to getting the players in aust.

May just consider getting it back there. =)
Thanx for all your opinions.

Apart from not being a big fan of buying overseas simply from the fact your shafting the local guy, a Nak would be the last thing i would wanna get O/S.

They are renowned for having the odd reliability problem and from what i have heard, they can fix the cd mechanism once and if it breaks again it cant be fixed.

So if it was the case and your brought it O/S it would serve you right not to have a headunit for a month or so.

will take that advice into serious consideration. Thanx!
