Full Version: Splits: How much power?

Hey all,

After alot of research i am about to purchase some Splits and a amp to run the Front stage in my car. I really like the sound of the Hertz HSK165's and so they sound like the ones i will be definatly getting.

For the AMP however, on a budget i have chosen to go with the Jaycar/Responce range. But i was wondering, i dont plan on having back speakers in my car, and if i do i would run them off the head unit, so which AMP should i choose?

I could go the 4*100, so the hertz would be getting 50W each with two spare that i could possibly have some rear full running off that in the future, this option costs more and i may not even use all the power, or..

I could just buy a responce two channel which is cheaper and is probably (IMO) more practical. Now poses the problem of running either the 2*84 or the 2*150. Which would run the hertz better?

Take into consideration, if i purchased the 150*2, if i ever upgraded later this amp would be good to run a sub. Also consider, if i bought the 4*100 amp, i could bridge it to run 2*150, and if i ever got rear fill later i would have an amp that suites fine.

I'm not sure, and i dont expect an answer to every question up there, but what are your guys opinions?

Thanks heaps for your time.

There are a few more amps good for splits in that price range...

I have an Audison Srx2 (can be had for about $280 or so) which does 2x65wrms...

Also check out the PG range... there was one which did 2x70wrms for about $270 from memory...

You would be looking at very similar prices for a new Jaycar 2.150.

But see, the Responce 2x84 or 4x50 can be had for around 200 each brand new. This is perfect for a budget, im just wondering would it be better to power some HSK165's with 150w, 84w or 50w?? OR say 65w from the Audison which is rather expensive compared to the above.

Also, if i decided to get a 4x50w and then bridge it to make 2x150, would this disadvantage me in any way, like sound quality, or volume wise?

if its for splits personally id go for the Audison. I had a Jaycar amp running my splits at one stage but wasnt really happy with it. Personally id go for the Audison only due to the fact that it has better SQ then the Jaycar.

personally i reckon if you're after SQ, the extra money spent on the audison SRx2 is very wisely spent

65rms is plenty for hsk165.

personally i'll probably pay the extra $80 or so and get the audison. and although the difference in sq between the audison and jaycar might or might not be there, it would be a safe bet to say that the audison xovers are of better quality. recently i discovered how import good xovers are.

I agree with that point. The 65 RMS should be plenty. I run 75 into my HSK's and that is fine. They do sound better with the more power as I used to run 150 into them but now only 75 into them and they still sound good.

i'm running a rated 100rms into my hsk's at present, seem to be quite happy with it but i wouldnt bother attempting too much more power
and like pretty much everyone else, i'd also suggest the SRx to run them, its not like 65watts is something to sneeze at

I'm not going to recommend an amp, but i'm going to tell you that the blue Jaycar amps(2x84 and 4x50) are not very good at all. Their crossovers hardly do anything and they don't sound very good. If you buy Jaycar, go for the black amps(2x150 and 4x100).

Thanks for the replies. I really appreciate it. I will most probably go that Audioson amp like you suggest, why not spend a little more and get the extra qaulity first time round. Are these amps only available through WAD? or are there some places around brisbane?

Thanks again
