I love the 'look' of 15" subs, is it possible to get sq subs in this size? or if i really want sq should i stick to 12"? Ultimatly, i guess, what makes a good sq sub?

Some of the best SQ systems use 15" subs, so yes, it's possible, but you need the front stage to match...
There's going to be a huge gap in the frequency response, and little midbass if you don't a front stage that can fill it in...

aslong as you have the power to feed a 15", you will get just as good sound quality from a 15" than you would from a 12". if your using a quality driver ofcourse.
Image Dynamics, Digital Designs and Eclipse come to the top of my head as manufacturing very high quality 15"s. just audition and find one you love the sound off
15"s can sound lousy if not powered adequately, so ensure you can give them at least half (preferably alot more and allow for head room) of their recommended power.
And finally, 8" 2 ways or 3 ways are a very good idea to ensure that you dont have a huge frequency gap between your fronts and your subs although a high quality 2 way will do the treat just as well

SQ 15, no problem.
Phoenix Gold Titaniums are another good choice.
You just need to run front stage that has strong mid-bass.
6.5s will do the job if they are up to it, otherwise 8s ideal if you can fit them up front.
I would think my Morel Hybrid 6.5s would do the job just fine, for instance.
Dynaudio 7s from 240 series another strong choice without going to 8s. Most people can fit them.

Pop in to dB Fever and audition the Hertz HX series sub, suprisingly good SQ but can still rumble with the best of them.

Although the above is mostly true, I would like to point out that the few SQ systems that are winning at top level with 15s, are using AP set ups(usually), have 8, 9, or 10 inch mad bass drivers etc, and so unless you are hardcore SQ, a smaller sub may better meet your needs. a 15 with 6.5" fronts, will cause problems SQ wise, more often than not, and so unless youare a top of range customer, a smaller sub will get SQ results better, than going large, pruely on a looks basis.
If you just wnat to look at sub, then why not go 18s or larger, but if you intend to enjoy music, then a smaller sub will typically provide better results, at significantly lower cost

Exactly, unless there is enough inches in the front stage, the sub will draw away from the mids and highs.
Bass is meant to be an integral part of the system along with midrange and treble, not the entire sound spectrum!

If a sub is playing up to 80hz, why does the front stage need to provide more midbass for the bigger sub?
The front stage wont have to play any lower or louder unless of course the 15inch is running louder, in that case just turn the 15 down.

Why do people think 15"s put out less midbass? That is not really the case, unless there is a box design issue, but most likely the subwoofer volume level is simply too high for good SQ.

id prefer a 12". but thats just my 2 cents worth. an 8 or a 10 is too poundy and a 15 seems too deep. and a 12" seems just like kelloggs just right
