I am going to be buying either an Alpine 7998 or 9815 over the next 4-6 weeks, and was wondering what the 7998 has over the 9815?

the differences are only minor. note that the 9815 is a newer model, so it comes in as better value, taking the best features of the 7998, adding some things here and there, and packaging them at a top value unit.
i've not done a direct comparison in SQ, but i would doubt there's any difference there.
notable differences include:
*cosmetics and layout: obvious bigger '1.5DIN' size face of the 7998
*FantomFace (fold away) of 7998 vs detachable face of 9815
*display: funky 'biolite' display of 7998 vs colour dot matrix of 9815
*blue buttons of 9815 vs selectable green/amber of 7998
*copper plate chassis of 7998; not sure if 9815 has it: prevent/limits outside 'noise' interference entering the casing/insides
*optical digital output on 7998: useful only for connecting up to external processors (eg: alpine digital 'PXA') or DACs
*inbuilt 4x60W peak amp in 9815
*direct MP3 folder access on 9815 rather than multistep button access on 7998
if you have an alpine digital processor, then the 7998 is ideal to hook up to that via the fibre optic. otherwise, your choice will probably boil down to cosmetic preference, button colour requirement, and budget.
both feature 'bass engine pro', including 5-band parametric EQ, digital xovers, and 6-channel time alignment.
and both a top quality decks with the 9815 better value IMO.

From personal experience, the 9815 is a lovely HU and very flexible.
But I have had a long and happy association over many years with Alpine HU's and mebbe a bit biased
The fact you can't take the face with you with the 7998, only "hide" it in the body when you leave the car put me off it.
But the biolite display is very cool.
Mr_Bob has a 9815 as well and I reckon he'd give a big thumbs up
Excellent thing.

fair call. although i've found, with tinted windows, you can hardly make out that it's a FantomFace HU. it looks very much like detachable face still.
and i looooove not having to carry a faceplate around now.

yeah me too !! the amount of times i almost lost the face of my pioneer.. leaving it in clubs on seats.. falling out of my pocket..
anyways it doesnt look too bad and like shiny said with tinted windows its really hard to make out that its a fantom face HU.
i dont think it would be too hard to make a fake cover for it just to be extra cautious, soemthing on my huge list of things to do
the 7998r has optical output
that is something that might be nice if you want to use external digital processing.
if the 9815 had toslink out id buy one today

i recently got the 9815 and got on the alpine bandwagon and all i can say is damm what took me so long, i went from the top of the range kenwood hu to this great alpine hu and what a big and better difference it made and i still dont know how to use it all as yet, and the detachable face did it for me and its lucky i did go the 9815 as the 1.5din wouldnt fit in my car and the biolite display is cool i guess, but the 9815 all the way a great deck.
my 2 cents worth
