Full Version: which sub to get?

Hi Guys,

i am looking at buying a new sub to replace my existing Alpine 12" Bass ZR (in a 1cu ft sealed box), running off an Alpine MRV-1507 bridged.

although the bass zr SQ sounds pretty good, it just isn't loud enough (and i want to keep the box as small as possible).

i was thinking about a Kicker L7 12", but i am not sure how they go in SQ. What are the Pheonix gold titanium 12D's like?

i want to spend under $500 and would prefer a DVC

the car is a skyline coupe, so the boot isn't that big and the cabin is well seperated from the boot (hence why the ZR's are a little quiet compared to my last car!)

Thanks for any help guys!

you won't 'need' a DVC at all. what you need is a sub of appropriate 'impedence' (resistance) to match the amp for best power output from the amp.

the MRV-1507 performs best when wired bridged driving 4ohm. so you 'need' a 4ohm sub. whether that's in the form of a SVC 4ohm or DVC 2+2ohm...doesn't matter diddly squat. an SVC will save you money and is how most 4ohm subs are produced. 'bigger' certainly ain't better.

the Ti series PG subs are reportedly excellent from those that use them. they'll suit sealed boxes, no probs. and you'll want the Ti12 (SVC) rather than the 12D (DVC) as it comes as 4ohm SVC or 4+4ohm DVC (which won't suit your amp so well).

the kicker L7 is also an excellent sub. the box is the key to SQ success. the current model L7 suits small sealed boxes, no probs (thiele-small spec: Qts 0.56).

other subs worth considering include the image dynamics IDQ, diamond audio M5/6 series, xtant hex X124, JL audio 12W3, etc. the M6 and xtant are closer to $600 but if you can stretch that far, you'll have an excellent SQ sub.

good luck

thanks Shiny_Car

some good leads there! though the JL Audio 12W3v2, according to their power application graphs (http://www.jlaudio.com/subwoofers/RP_Chart.html) seem to be out of the ball park (around 250wrms), and the 12W7 (which is in the powerband) is pretty expensive!

do you or anybody else have any ideas as to where i may be able to get an M6 online or in Sydney?

relatively low power handling for a sub is no big deal. the JL W3 series is top quality. you'll have plenty of power on tap, more than required, so the amp won't be stressed. and the sub is fairly flexible in box design: whether you want sealed or ported. still worth a listen.
