Are Crossfire BMF W12D subwoofers any good?? I saw them in a red Pulsar at Autosalon, and he was getting good numbers. A friend of mine is thinking about putting them into his Pulsar ET hatchback, with a 1000 watt Digital Amp, tuned to cabin res freq.

BMF's are a good all round sub.

That said I've had a lot of problems with the lead wires:

a: Slapping against the cone, making an audible noise

b: Leadwires breaking or even burning out

These things stopped us using them in the end.

do you mean tuned to the cabins resonant frequency, or tuned so the box peaks at the cabins resonant frequency?

tuned to the cabins resonant frequency is a BAD idea

I was going to tune it to the cabin resonance frequency, is this bad idea. I thought this was the best way... is there a better way?

generally it is better to tune the port(s) lower then the res freq of the car so the box will peak at the resonant freq.

but back on topic. kramy has 6 of the 15's and running off 3 amps. and his van is bloody loud! i think he hits about 156 or 157db.

yes, you'll find that because of the way the box, sub and port react it will be louder if you tune a certain amount below *resonant frequency* it will be louder

also, if your amplifiers are particularly powerful (or you are running below their rated nominal level ie 2 ohm instead of 4 ohm) then you may have a good chance if frying your sub if you play a tone for too long

the best way to find the loudest tuning is to start tuning low and slowly shorten the port until it is loudest..

now you may be thinking, what if I just plug the numbers into *insert box design program here* and see how low I should tune. Well, unfortunately, the frequency response plot is not accurate enough for an SPL box and generally you should tune a bit lower than where it peaks (somtimes there is a flat peak that complicates things somewhat)
when designing an SPL box I look at all of the other graphs to guess an approximate tuning frequency and I'd usually try a few hz lower rather than a few hz higher

(but if you don't know what you are looking for, it will just confuse you more - any recommendations that I'll ever make with a box program are just educated guesses)

that red pulsar is cameran *spelling* its the loudest S1-2 car in oz atm with a pb of 150.8 i think it was that was using the phd2 but now hes gone back tot he 1000D

the BMF range from crossfire is very good value for money

[edit] just so u guys know, this post is actually purps - an error cause eXup to come up instead ;) [/edit]

second that! sounded great too. Can't really help you with their aspect of durability though.
