Full Version: Dilemma.... SQ or SPL

I have my own opinions in regards to being able to balance SQ with SPL, but is it possible to build a system that is competitive in SPL (not necessarily big numbers, but biggish - say 145+), and still retain a decent amount of SQ?

im in the process of building my new system, and am in a dilemma as to box design. i have a tech from Custom Car Sound (importers of Kicker, MTX etc) helping me out with the boxes.. they have come up with a few designs for me, but im worried that a box aimed more for SQ wont give the bass im after, and that a SPL aimed box wont give the SQ im after!!

one idea they had was to build a slot ported box with multiple ports with covers, that can be removed for SPL and covered up for SQ (and daily driving).. what are your opinions on this style of box? has anyone done it?

i dont think i'll be entering the new setup in comps as i dont think it will be competitive in S3-4, so a full SPL system wont be done, but im soo used to having big bass on tap!... hence my dilemma!!!

(btw I'll be using three (or four) 10s off a big Class D amp..)

Yes thats a good idea,

The multiple ports idea is solid, alternatively you could use one large port and insert a port plug to tune lower for daily driving, pulling the plug to tune higher for SPL.

Have your cake, and eat it too.

it depends.. I'd say to my ears, low bass sounds louder than higher bass at the same SPL

but using port plugs is generally a good idea

one thing to remember is that a sq system is all about linarity, making your system sound like the is no individual speakers, thus not bass heavy.

spl is not about muzik, it's about making everyone think you have earth moving equipment in the boot

it's that fine line in the middle that i am looking for too...

oh, and ask ignite about his port plug, apparantly there is very little audiable difference between them (cant remember the two freq's though)

His SPL port is at 48hz... i "think" he daily is about 10hz below that...
