There are 2 ways to go:

Rear load: turn as much of the back (nearest to bumper) into a sub box. You will prolly have to use spare tyre well (if its in the floor) for this method.

Mini wall: have the sub box at the front, and totally seal off around it. If its not good seal, you lose SPL.

Mini wall is more work, and will suck if done wronng, but better result if done right.
Loading is less work, but kiss ya boot good bye.

If there is any ventelation (ski ports, holes for speakers, stuff like that) try to have the box behind that, so it kind of vents through that. Apart from that, experiment

Some people say as close as possible to the back of the boot to avoid cancelation. But putting it to close can cause a band-pass effect. This may increase or decrease your spl depending on your box design. I think 250mm is a safe distance though, personally I haven't tested within 300mm I would like to soon though.

At one stage I moved my box from around 500mm to around 300mm (this was an old box, not my current one) and it gave me a 1.4db increase.

I doubt there is any way of determining which is the best distance other then test test test and more test.

install doesnt seem to look as good when the box is really close to the end of the boot

good looking spl install? who are you kidding? j/k doesn't mean the box has to stay in that position... I only pull mine near the back of the boot for burps and push it back in its place for street driving.

my experience with spl in a large car shows:
rear loading only works with a sealed box !!
and like andu i pull my box to the back for spl runs and put it back behind the seat for daily driving !!
on a ported box fire them forwards i found to help the best.
on ported a mini wall as discussed and sealed properly would help alot.

The thing that works for my car is subs and ports on the same plane and facing up at the boot lid, still as far back as possible, I have been told to keep subs at least 8" away from boot lid and ports at the back off the box

hope this makes sense and helps a bit

Moved it to about 200mm yesterday and I dropped .1db from my previous run at 300mm bit of food for thought
