if my port is 21cm long and i want to flare the ends will i need to get a new pipe and still make sure that after it is flared the port is still 21cm or can i just flare this one and it will be a bit shorter?

thanks in advance

the flaring will raise the tuning a tiny bit, but unless the port length has been tuned for max SPL (with a meter) then I wouldn't worry about it

well i will be going to the test and tune night early next month so it will be properly tuned then. at the moment the port was supposed to be 38hz and the resonant frequency of my car is 51hz. as you know from the other thread i am not entirely sure about the tuning though. Do you think i should just go to the test and tune and see how close it peaks to 51hz and then do the adjusting/flaring? i wanted to get it measured before and after the flaring to see how much gain/loss.

also, my resonant frequency is 51hz, does this mean that my 38hz box will peak close to that anyway just becuase of the vehicle it is in?

thanks

what I meant was, the difference in tuning between having a flared port and not having one may not make much difference (as far as listening to it goes) unless it is the perfect length for max SPL, then it might make a small difference (on the meter)

you can still flare it now if you want to

Your setup will most likely still peak at 51hz if that is where the car peaks. Their are 2 ways to work you the best SPL port lenght for your car. 1. get a box design program and fiddle around with it untill you get the lenght of the port so that the box peaks at 51, 2. make a long post and slowely shorten it untill you hit your biggest figure but make sure that you give the batterys time to rechange and the subs to cool down.

the frequency response plot on a box program can be a bit missleading, but starting with a long port and slowly shortening it is the most accurate way of getting the length right

from my understanding..

your tuning is based on a port diameter/surface area.

once you flare a port your basically, increasing that area. depending on the flare,
whether it's internal/external or both.

Just internal would effectively mean the port would be shorter than it actually is, as the air pressure is lost sooner/earlier in the port itself. So you may need to increase the port length or compensate...

yes, it will raise tuning, but the effect isn't huge enough to worry about for daily driving

well i was going to do the port shortening method but what i wanted to know is after i have got my port peaking at 51hz, if i flare it will it change the frequency. so it will raise the tuning a bit, so i could make another one that is about 2cm longer and flare that one instead. and this should still be peaking at 51hz? hopefully
