can you have a battery in the boot hooked up to amps but the battery not hooked up to anything? ie, not hooked up to an alternator, just sitting there
in theory it should be OK if you are only just going to do a 3 second burp?
would it need to be grounded?

I'm not sure if that would be against the rules or not..
as long as you don't draw too much current, the voltage shouldn't drop too much..
you wouldn't have to ground it to the car if you hook both the positive and negative from the amp directly up to the battery
keeping in mind you will also loose the alternators output

you could only have it on a seperate circuit if it was the ONLY power source for the amplifiers that it is supplying power to.
i don't think there is any benefit for doing this.
remember if you are S1-2 you can't use a battery other than the standard one, but you can upgrade it so long as it fits in the OEM location.
in S3-4 you can add another battery wherever you like, so long as it is no bigger than the one in the OEM location.
if you are going to be competing in SS or extreme, knock yourself out.
