Full Version: Less is More?
Mobile Electronics Australia > Mobile Electronics Discussion > SPL and Competition Discussion

Just a continuation from the what I said in the other topic, there seems to be a trend that the more woofers you have, you get disproportionate returns in SPL.

Some factors that may account for this are:
- people who use more woofers tend to buy cheaper ones
- there is less space to have the optimum enclosure
- it is more difficult to power more woofers
- you get more cancellation.

The same could also apply to amps as well, due to issues of current supply etc.

At the recent comp I went to (my first comp!) the competitors in my class (single 12" or 2x10's) had generally bigger SPL scores than people in the above class.

I would just like people's thoughts on this topic, and any examples they have seen that shows less can be more...

Many many more people are competing in lower classes, so those people really have to try hard to beat others.

It's easier to get it right with just one woofer.

You see cars all the time that barely manage mid 140s off four 15s etc. This is normally because they end up with woofers that face the wrong way (cancellation issues) or boxes that are too small etc.

i was talking to my car audio installer yesterday and origionally they said for me to go a 1.5cu.ft box ported.

i then told them i wanted to compete in SPL comps and they said to go DOWN to a 1cu.ft box ported. tuned at 45hz.

don't quote me fully on this as he didn't run this setup through the computer so it might be best at 1.5cu.ft. but something to think about none the less.

I expect to see BIG numbers in SS 5-8 and 9+ in the US next year

other factors are, since it is cheaper to buy less woofers, there are more competitors (thus more serious competitors) in the lower woofer classes

SupraBOY - what woofer? although 1 cu/ft tuned to 45hz would be a very bad SPL box for most woofers I can think of

What I really wanted to get from this tread was whether running 1x12 or 2x10's would give me the greater chance for more SPL.

I am looking to hit 145+, which is doable with 1x12. I tried it yesterday by just sticking other subs (Eclipse and Type R) in my current box, and I hit 143.7 & 143.3 respectively. I would think that in their ideal box these subs would do 145.

What do people think?

2x10's... more motor strength. Although possibility of cancelation. 2x10's in a single chamber, single big port is what I would be putting my money on.

I'd also say 2 10s, but if you get one 12", then when you want more SPL it will be easy to get another 12" :-)

The main issue is that I don't think I have the bootspace for the optimum boxes for 2x12's. Plus, they cost more!

oh come on. glass out the spare tyre well and load off the bootlid..... you'll have plenty of room

I would personally go for one 12. By the time you pay for two reasonable quality 10's, you could buy one high quality 12, and the same will go for amps. Or you could get a DVC 12 and run it off 2 amps?? Just an Idea.

How about two high quality 10's vs one high quality 12? My reason for the two choices is not from price, but from competition class. I don't want to move up to 2x12's cause I think it is too competitive. Also, 2 amps is out of the question because I wanna stay in street.
