Hey im going to start building my box for my sub (2nd box as first one was like swiss cheese with air leaks everywhere)

Bassaholic recommended a 2.5cuft (after all displacements) box with a 4"x4" port 16.5" long. Tuned to around 28 or 29hz.

So ive got the dimensions ready but not sure if theyre all correct so i need some double checking =)

Internal dimensions are as follows
11" x 14" x 32.5" for the box using 18mm mdf

port is 4" x 4 " using the box wall and is 16.5" long (must have a bend)
Q) How do i measure the length of the port through the bend? measure down the center?

so im gathering this is correct as there mould be roughly 0.4cuft displacement from the port and sub combined.

This is my first attempt at a ported box so i want to do it right because ive heard that you can destroy your sub if it bottoms out and stuff (anyone care to explain that too? )

Do the dimensions sound right? any other suggestions? any comments good or bad

thanks in advance

EDIT: I just read the description of what this section is about and this may be off topic so if it is feel free to move it or delete it =)

I remember hearing last week that the new L7's are suited to sealed box's...

I wouldnt know about the new ones...
All the L5 and L7s up to and including 2002 models are suited for either sealed or ported.

I rekon it would be a shame to see them only in sealed as these subs go fairly decent in SPL comps (especially in the states)

Well they have a highish Qts of ~0.5 suggesting that they are more suited to sealed enclosures but they still sound awesome in ported boxes Why i'm not sure?

Not all that familiar with L5s, certainly the 2002 model L7s have higher Q than the 2001 model and will be a bit "fatter" than say a 2001 L7 dual 2 which had the lowest Q of the family.

The beauty of squares is how versatile they are. Without pulling out the calculator, those dimensions look pretty good, if bassA says that's the alignment (port tune) that would be pretty reliable, 29Hz is low enough IMO.
You will see my alignment in my sig

I would recommend (as Kicker does) the use of a subsonic filter with a ported box for this
ie a steep (24dB/octave ideally) cut-off a couple of Hz below tuning frequency to stop input where the driver starts to lose control.
If you throw a lot of power at it then will broadly prevent the driver from excursion-limiting in its power handling.

Hope that helps

putting a solobaric in a ported box without a subsonic filter will creat a longevity issue, ie. the sub wont last long, the spider will stretch and the sound will become loose and undefined. i killed an L7 in under a year by porting it, although with the correct subsonic filters and good clean power your L7-L5 should last, but go easy.
i've now got mine all sealed up in a 1.25cuft box, not as 'interactive' as the ported box but alot more musical. they say you cant have your cake and eat it to, but a large sealed is very close.
i have my ported box, for a 12"L7 sitting in the lounge being used as a coffee table so if anybody in melb want to try it for a while your quite welcome to give it a go.
