Full Version: Which amp for a JL 12'?

Recently acquired my 12" JL Sub. The new W3 model whatsits. It's dual voice coil 2ohm, supposedly it should have 250wrms running through each coil.

Currently i have a jaycar 2x150 response amp powering it, bridged so it's around 450 wrms at 4ohm. The box has only one set of connectors, so i've been told it's wired in series within the box.

So here's the 2 questions. What amp could i get on a low'ish budget that would bring out the best in the sub, and, how much difference would it actually make?

Thanks,
Shev.

I believe it is 250rms for the sub, not per coil. The Jaycar amp would be plenty of power for it, but obviously you'll get better SQ from something better.

id be tempted to get another response 2x150 just for that little extra!
sound quality?? i dont get it how can u have quality from a speaker that plays less than 80hz. its always bothered me how it affects it?

I looked up your sub after you left, If it is indeed the version 2 the sub is rated at 300wrms, while the version 1 is rated at 250wrms. A small but significant difference.

JL allow for 100% overpowering, so the version 2 sub will take 600wrms no worries. Would have been better to get a Dual 4ohm sub and run it off the response 4x100.

If you look into getting a bigger amp, then a small 1ohm monoblock, would be on the cards. Such as a lanzar amp, from hifi driect. I believe there is a model before the 1200d which would be ideal.

IF all else fails ull have to go with a 2 channel amp bridged to a single 4ohm channel. These amps aren't exactly cheap, with retail prices upwards of $800

what do you guys think of modding the 2x150 to play at 2ohm - gains down a bit for each VC?

i was thinking of getting the same but might get the 2 4ohm version and getting 2 2x150.

would this be suitable for a MX6 coupe or would a 15" WO4 be better.

sorry for the hijack!

IMO opinion a JL 12w3 Version 2 woofer is far better suited to the 4x100wrms amp.

600wrms would be perfect, just make sure its dual 4ohm.

So lino28 i would go with the single 12inch JL12w3 V2, the 12inch woofer would be far superior to the 15inch in terms of power handling and sound quality, also the amount of room the 12inch sub will take up will be far less.
lino28
good but how would they goin terms of SPL in my sedan, both with properly tuned boxes?
Maz
The 12inch would win hands down. The 15's actually wont even get louder when in a ported box, so you have to keep using a sealed box with them, talk about wierd.

Some members have fried a 15wo with as little as 400wrms. The 12w3 v1 takes 400wrms all day, version 2 will take more than 500wrms.
