just a quick question! (and probably a stupid one)

there's a lot of talk about burps in SPL comps but what kind of sound are these!?? is it just a word used to describe a certain frequency or is it some weird sound that u play!??
Jetstream
To get the reading, you only need to play the tone for a few seconds. So a 'burp' is just a short, low-pitched tone used to get a score.

Not that anyone can burp @ 145dB
adcola64
well, generally they are just a sine wave, but people generally play these tones at such a high volume level it begins to sound like a burp as the coils and such heat up causing the sound to change slightly.

but if you want a better explanation, I suggest you question some of the best burpers, Andu, Kickerboy, Purps, Incar Phil, etc.

Its like a baby.. pat it on the back *press PLAY*, wait 3 seconds, BUUUUUUUUURP, then its finished *press STOP*. Wipe the dribble from the cars chin and park it. Wait *random time* and repeat.

When people refer to a "burp" they mean playing a sine wave. Usually for 1.5 - 2 seconds, depending what CD you have. As adcola64 said, it kinda resembles a burp, as its short, and loud It doesnt refer to any frequency in particular, just the one your playing for an SPL comp...

I use the cd "SPL Shootout" on the Pandisc label. It has 89 tracks - the first 19 are bass songs for generaly cranking, track 19 is a full 20k -20Hz sweep, and tracks 20 - end of disc are "frequency per track" sine waves. So track 32 is a 19 second track of 32 Hz, track 78 is a 19 second track of 78 Hz, and so on. So in SPL competition, when u have tuned your system and found the optimum frequency for maximum SPL, you just dial up the track on the head unit, turn up the volume, pause it and wait for the 30 second Drag run.....

I've sweated a few times when pressing the pause button once the counter has started and had no sound come out. I run the deck outside the vehicle and hold it in my hands, and if the deck is not relatively level, the cd won't play. It scares the crape out of you when what u expect is a 150Db BAAHHHHHHH and all u get is 2000 RPM of exhaust blowing in your face....

Check out the dB Jams CD, as the burps are NOT 19 seconds long! playing them for that long may/will cause damage! so if you dont have a pause button to press just after it hits your in trouble...

Well of course, when I run the burp in comps it's for just on a second, that's all that is required to get the numbers on the screen.

yes, but in street we can only use the deck in the dash, thus we use our remote controls... you don't want your remote to run out of battery during one of those 19sec tracks as things might go up in smoke. yeh, it's just safer with shorter tracks...

Agreed.
