Full Version: The perfect box.
Mobile Electronics Australia > Mobile Electronics Discussion > SPL and Competition Discussion
When designing your subbox, apart from the speaker and amp choice, what sort of other things should you keep in mind? i.e. the frequency responce of the car? (or whatever you call it)
Bassaholic
Frequency response, cone excursion (ie within linear excursion limits at full power), sensitivity (ie does it get loud enough), group delay/phase response (ie you want to avoid any delays that your ears will be able to percieve while playing music) and the vent air velocity (too high = chuffing) if it is a vented box..

Basically there is no "perfect box" but there is a "perfect compromise" to suit your application.
What about the acoustics (sp) of the car? what does this mean?
I've been designing a Sub Box with WINISD and was wondering if either of these box desings are good?

just depends on what you are looking for in your subby, if you want a spl or sql system, the caa website has a calculator for the size (volume) and stuff for tuning it... i think its on the downloads page... worth checking out
The volume of the box isn't the issue here. I would like to know what responce I should go for in an SQ install.

If you wanted the best sound quality, to rumble and still be tight, its pretty much impossible.

A 15inch in a 4 cubic foot ported box tuned to 25hz would go very very low, then use a 10inch sub in a small sealed box 0.5cubic feet. That setup would go so deep and be so tight. Also u'd fire the 10 into the cabin and the 15 rear load.

If you set the delays right that would be pretty much teh best setup, however if you have money to get that to work you might aswell go with 8's upfront. THat allows u to go tigth and deep, as the 8's play teh tightness
I have plans to put 8' speakers in boxes in the parcel shelf. But for now its only going to be 2 x 10' SS drivers in the boot. The design to date has the subs facing backwards with the vents porting thru the ski hole.

With Dual 10's they'll be able to bridge the gap between your fronts quite easily. I wouldn't bother with the 8's on the shelf, u'll just hear a bit more bass from the back which is bad?

For SQ, I'd try 0.8 cu/ft net per sub.. (1.6 cu/ft for both subs)

Vented will give better efficiency, but the very long vent requirements will make it hard to do.. The vented enclosure I'd try would be 2.2 cu/ft net with one 3" port per sub, 16.5" long.. (A common chamber - so it'll be 1.1 cu/ft per sub)
I tried your suggestion of the 1.1 cubed box in WINISD and comes up similar to one of the ones in the links above. At least that tells me I'm on the right track

Although it recommends having a different size port. It is also tuned at around 20Hz, is that good, bad or personal prefference?
