Ok well bigger the port the better for SPL, by the look of what andu did.

But what about playing music? will i get 2-3db gain by just having a huge phat port?

it's all about luck ... you can bild a box with a 5 inch port then a 15 inch port .. and the 5 inch might work betta ... and then put the 15 inch port in a diff car and it might be louder in that car .... the box .. has to work with the sub , with the car , with the power of the amp , it's luck , somebody might have a 2 inch port .. and you have a 10 inch port and they still might beat you ? ? ?

its not all luck. There is a hell of alot of calculations that go into making the right box for a sub and for the type of car. Testing is also essential...

Bigger port area means lower port velocity which is good for SQ.

AJs Civic has 600 square inches of port and a 26 cube box that pounds out awesome clean, tight SQ bass when tuned to 28Hz, mind you it still pushes 160dB!!

At 140 dB, the woofers barely move, so you have no cone breakup or non-linear excursions to mess up the sound.

This is the advantage of ported boxes over sealed. A ported box will play as loud a sealed box, but with only a quarter of the power (amp works less = less distortion and heat). Plus, with a ported box you have more control over the woofer's response, so you can match it to the car's acoustics, eliminating the boominess that a lot of small sealed boxes exhibit.

Ported is good, big ported is even better!

manufacturer's specs are pretty good for the average joe, but if you want to mess with things, build u'r box so the ports are adjustable. one setting for music, one for spl.

Yes and no..

A bigger port will be significantly louder if you are getting significant losses from the port.. (as well as a loud chuffing sound..)

If your ports are not making a chuffing sound, then you won't notice a difference if you use a larger port..

Like someone above said Make ur box so u can change ports.

my box has a 4" port tuned to 28Hz for cool sounding lows and i also made a port which will tune the box to 42Hz more for SPL which i havnt even used yet coz i dont have a db meter.

Not that i'd even break over 140 LOL
