ohio.
if you are running heaps of amps, alternators are pretty much a waste of money. cheaper to buy batteries and have them run without an alt.

yeah but inbetween runs, the alt will give they little bit more, the alternator can put out anyvoltage, if your serious get an auto elec (a good one) to try and make something that will stepup the voltage to a solid 14.4 most of your cars funtions will hande that, that way your alternator will give your batteries a top up after each run, if your running a full 16v setup and each burp your having to really push your setup buy the time you get to your final, you will have bugger all voltage left, at least this way your can top em up that little bit more, but yes bosch make the ambo one, they will do close to maximum output at idle, they have the same needs as car audio person current draw wise, imagine a patient in the make on a mri machine and the only way for it to work is to have an ambo revving to 7k up front just to get the output, sorry poor joke but its hot
cheers
jon
sorry to hijack your post...but whats the physical size of an ambo alternator? ie: will it fit in my telstars engine bay where only a 75amp one is ment to go?

thanks guys, will look into the ambo thingy. it is still an everyday driver, he he, but the fusing is supposed to be 240 amp for the sub amp alone. i'd be happy with 200 amp suply .
but just out of curiosity, what's a gen worth?

bigw, you can just get a car charger to charge the batteries between runs.

Give this place a try:
http://www.ashdown.com.auDon't think you will find exactly what you are looking for from their web page so give them a call as they offer some pretty good high output alternators eg. 150Amp+ ones. Though Last time I was quoted about $500 for a 150amp leece neville one.
OOh yeah check out their trade links section as well for links to some aftermarket alternator mnufacturers.
They also sell alternator replacement parts such as external regulators, brushes, rectifiers, and the usual standard direct fit aftermarket alternators.
Note that they are an electronics place so only sell the alternators and parts and you will still have to get the alternator and wiring fitted yourself which is the hard part

fuggin ay. i swapped the original one 'bout a year ago, and it IS a _unt of a job if u got extractors/heat baffles on the ford inline six.
i had to dismount the power steer pump, lose the thermo's, and it still took farken ages, and i still bent some of the fins on the rad core.
so fitting a physically larger alt is going to be f_cked....... but if i can find one large enough.......... :-)

Leece Neville make a 200A alt for emergency services. It is 210mm between the bottom and top mount holes and it is 101mm between the 2 bottom mount holes. It's RRP is $2998. That should temper your interest. It puts out 120A@2000RPM and full output is at 4000RPM.

what is the fetish with large alts that cost this much!!??? buy a train load of batteries and you'll get less voltage drop! and then spend a couple of hundred on a 'hardcore' charger to charge the vehicle between runs.

some of us wanna bloody drive along with music u know!!!!
a new battery or 5000 is not goingto make a dif when the cars going, its just going to put more stress on the altenator and cause MORE VOLTAGE DROP!!!

drawing anything over 100A for daily driving music is insane! thats close to 150db MUSIC! and for 100A, the stocko 70-80A alt will do, get a 120A aftermarket one if it makes you feel better. and don't try and tell me you can draw over 200A with music, because YOU WILL BE DEAF very soon!

FYI. The auto industry is forcasting that the average car in 5 years time will need a 1000A alternator. To this end they are planning to dump the concept of the alternator in favour of a combined alt/starter motor that will mount between the engine and gearbox and is the same diameter as the bellhousing.

what are we gonna be running in a car in 5 years time!!!! a damn cray supercomputer or sumthing!!!
ohwell, a nice chunky power supply like that will mean nice chunky amplifiers are able to be powered

I was chasing up a high-output alternator over 4 years ago... Stinger brand one was going to cost me over $3000 and there were none in the country because no-one in their right mind would spend that much money on an alternator! For that much money you're better off just get more batteries and one of them 40A (really puts out 46A) Switched Mode Power Supplies (I'm sure they're on the CAA store?!) and connect that between runs...

2 second hand 85A alternators. Thats 160A or 2 new 120A Bosch. Thats 220A @ roughly $600.

Ivan, doesn't running 2 alts only give a more stable supply, ie a stronger 12v supply @ 85 amps or what ever the alts are putting out, and not the more alts u add the more amps you get?????

Somebody better tell the guy in the states that has 10 hooked up. Worst case. You use one to run your car and one for your stereo.
