I purchased this head unit (7874EB) approximately six months ago, and can literally say that it hasn't put a foot wrong:
1) It looks damned sexy. If there is a better looking head unit that you can get for that money (I only paid $450 cash) then i'll be buggered!
2) It provides superior levels of adjustment compared to other head units within this price bracket. You can adjust the bass and treble frequency's to match the sort of music you listen to, and for all those sceptics, YES, you can hear the difference.
3) Build quality is excellent. The way that the facia clips into the deck is the best that I have come across; my housemate bought the JVC MP3, and it wobbles like jelly.
4) The display is ultra-clear and won't give you any problems. It can be easily seen during the day and at night time it is awesome, perhaps a little bit bright, and then there is the fact that it glows in four different colours (blue, green, orange and white) but it's all good!
5) Functions! The unit has V-link which means that for around $70 you can easily link up your laptop or a vcr or another input device such as a stacker to the unit. The unit comes with CD changer control, but will only work with the old Alpine stakers (ie: the black ones) and not the new ones in the Alpine range. Subwoofer control is very handy.
For the price that I paid I couldn't be happier. It is the perfect head unit if you just want something above entry level but below audiophile level. Plus you are buying Alpine, so you know that everything will last you for ages!
I would highly recommend this head unit (you might have guessed this by now!)

maybe an alpine cda7892e. i think it offers slighlty better value than the cdm7874eb. pretty sure you can get it for about the $600 mark. it has a rrp of $629 so i would be surprised if you couldn't get it for less.
