Hey, I want SPL for the loudness and the DB, But will i be pissed because of the quality of the bass? What are the maj0r diferences?

SPL only cares about the volume level at the dash (assuming dbdrags/caadb). whereas SQ, is not only about the subs, but also takes into account the front stage, imaging, stage height etc. just concentrate on SPL for now and go over to SQ when you get bored

just build your box for spl and have 2 different ports, one large one tunned high for spl and one tunned lower that fits inside the first for sq.
Or even make the spl port so it can be sealed of (air tight) for sq.
which way you go kinda depends on your choice of sub as it my sound "loose" or "boomy" in a large ported box.
I think Ripped uses 2 ports, don't you John?
Floppy really loud bass is what its all about. Who needs sq

One of the boxes I made had 4 ports in them. When you sealed off 2 of the ports with screw caps, it lowered the tuning to something like 35Hz, without it was 42Hz for spl. The box sounded like absolute sh*t. But the idea worked.

Have a listen to a car like our Civic (see next issue of Hot 4s).

It's undergoing another rebuild atm, it now has a front end consisting of Boston Pro 5s and four Boston Pro 8s for midbass. Add this to the 160++ dB from it's four Digital Designs 9515s and you have the best of both worlds.

To answer your question, bass that wins SPL comps can sound awesome if you have the right gear and install.

I love SQ, but at 150+ dB. Music is not the same unless it's loud. I mean all music, my fiancée is a violinist and we go to classical concerts all the time, so I'm not a head banger!

Sound Quality at 150+ dB is a myth..

First of all, even when your mids and highs are REALLY loud, they will only be putting out around 120dB.. Sure your midbass and sub bass may be much louder, but that isn't SQ..

Secondly, when you have loud deep sub bass, it intermodulates with other sounds, ie the music coming from your front speakers, or even your voice when talking .. I've heard this in cars that barely hit 135dB.. (granted these cars were flat to 30hz) Turn the bass off and suddenly the distortion from your front speakers goes away and your voice no longer sounds funny..

richie hacked my box up. i think he made it tuned to light 60hz with 230sq in of port, there goes SQ out the door!

Hrmm, im not so top **** on this stuff.
If i put 2 shocker ss subs in the boot. (SPL)
2 splits in the front door (SQ)
Pioneere Head unit.
Amps, not sure.

How will that be?
160db ? but with trebble too?
I need to work out what kind of parts of speakers and **** i want in my car.
plz help

i dont think you will be hitting 160db with those subs unless you have a highly effective box/setup and a fair amount of power, but i think what people are stressing is that it is primarily in the install, if your box is setup for sq properly then you may have wicked sq, but you might also have another box/port for sq.
cheers

There is no way you'd get 160dB from Shocker SSs.. Maybe 150dB for burps and 140-145dB dB in a daily driving box..

They are only cheap $75 US subs..

Mate, there's no way you're hitting 160 with two 12"s!!!

Especially on the new TermPros! The record in Street A in the US with the new mics is only around 152!!!

I think you would very hard strapped hitting 150 with 2 of them... nobody in Aus has even come close on the new mics, with 146.7 being the highest...

I've got waveguides under the dash and 8's in the doors and heaps of power to the front - with the car doing 145+ dB and the front stage running as loud as it will go, it sounds damn good!

People can have a listen if the grab me first thing on Saturday at the Epping event!

PM me first so I know not to start ripping the car apart as soon as I get there! (As in getting it ready for dB...)

i dont mean any offence, nor to be stating the obvoius, but do you really understand how loud 160db is? actually have you ever heard a 150db car? 145db? and not a guestimated db either, i mean real deal?

Use two ports.. hrmm. Why is every thinks I'm crazy running the Magma's in a 45hz tuned enclosure daily ?
With sensible setting of gains, and playing at sensible volume levels I've found it to be quite fine to run the SPL "port" daily.. they can handle reasonably low lows without a problem and are nice & tight on all frequencies they play. But then again, I wouldnt expect anything less from them.

As for "160's with treble".. 160dB isn't as easy as you seem to think.. Hell 150 isn't as easy as most people think. And I doubt you'll hit it playing music.
I've been talking to a dude in the US who uses a Ford Festiva, pair of Kove Armageddon U2 15's in a wall with over 2000WRMS per coil (2 amps per sub) and 1 Optima YT battery per battery. He's only just hitting 160dB "Port Wars" style (mic in passengers kick) burping it.

I'll second what GMHVNS says..

Yeah.... It didn't take me long to hit 150, but I was one of the rare cases where the best box for SPL was built early in my competition career, and that's why it never changed. If you can get a car to consistently hit 150+, keep your head up coz in Oz you are doing well...
