REFER TO THE LAST POST PLEASE!!
plan to make a box for my 18" and was wondering if anyone can tell me roughly wot size will suit it.
in the manual it says it can be put in a seal or ported box.
it reccomends a sealed box size of 1.0 - 2.2 cubic ft.
or in a vebted box 1.7 cubic ft, ported to 26 hz with a 3" wide by 9.5" long port.
not too sure if these are the best sizes for the sub, coz a 1 cubic ft sealed box seems smallish to me. ???
here are some specs:
Fo (Hz) = 18.8
Qms = 3.25
Qes = 0.54
Qts = 0.36
Vas = 166 L
EBP = 61
SPL = 93.5
Xmax = 44mm
any help would be greatly appreciated!!

hmm, i'm getting an EPB of 34.8. i guess i did something wrong
my recommendations might be a little out then
sealed around 60lts. ported around 100lts tuned to 22hz.

Those specs don't add up..
There is an AW1805, AW1805x and AW1805q and all seem to have different specs too what you have given...

man i got those specs from the manula that came with the sub.
i got all types of figures too, thats why i thought i'd post in here...
confused now...
but anyways wot do you think will be a suitable box type for it?? and wot size?

An 18" sub in a ported 1.7cube box, you've got to be kidding? not looking at the specs I would be wanting to put it in atleast double that.

email audiobahn, they will be able to help better.
if it was me, i'd put it in a 5cf+ ported box tuned high for SPL.

I had a good look at these two years ago, HUGE!! magnet and motor structure.
If I remember correctly the guys in the States were not going BIG with their ported Boxes with this sub because it really lessened its power handling as box size went up.
1 cubed sealed or something was the factory recommendation for the old model I think.
Great looking sub, .

4 cubes ported and tuned to 22hz would be what i reccomend, it should really go deep.

ok well i've finally got around to getting some wood and i am bout to go today and get it, but first i want to finalise the size of my box so i can figure out the exact size of the mdf i need so the bunning peepz can cut the wood for me and save me a lot of hassles.
the sub will be used for spl only, don't really need heapz of sound quality out of it coz it will only really be used for comp due to my recent catching of the spl bug.
wot do you'se think bout 3 cubes ported? or should i stick to around 2.2-2.5 sealed?
spl is the main goal, so which ever would help increase that!
thanx

forget sealed for those subs...
how much space have you got to work with? what car is it going in?
assuming it's that 95 civic hatch.... 4-5cf ported to about 45hz

hey ripped thats about wot i was thinking... but i'm not too sure how long and wide i need to make my ports to tune it to 45hz?
how can u test to see if the box is tuned to 45hz?
one other thing, space is a bit tight in the hatch, but i can face it up or mount it inverted utilizing the the spare tyre well.
which would be the best loading for the sub, inverted or facing up??

when i had my audiobahns subs i lost dbs when i inverted the sub. so face it up.

i'm going with a 5 cubic ft box after all displacement. hoping to tune to 45 hz for spl.
thats as big as my hatch will allow.
can anyone help me with designing a slot port to tune to this freq, i've never made a ported box before.

after speaker displacement the box will have an internal volume of 4.74 cubes.
i till haven't taken into account the port displacement though.
external box dimensions are:
35" wide
20" deep
16" high
can some help me out with what sized slot port i would need to use to tune the box to 47Hz??
or at least the round port equivilent??
and is there any site or someone out there that can explain the best and easiest way to make a slot port?
truely appreciate any help!!

Try the port calculator.
http://www.carstereo.com/help2/Articles.cfm?id=31Just remember it does not take into account the port displacement - the enclosure volume you enter is the net internal volume. Also, when calculating a slot port, enter the smallest of either the width or height in as the width, otherwise it will tell you an incorrect length..

hey thanx for the link, it helped a bit, but i'm confused which calculator to use??
when i use the first one and enter in the xmax of my sub which is 44mm, it gives me a port area of over 300inches or 20 odd inch wide round port??
thats way to big?
what's a good port area for my sub, i was thinking 18.5x4 = 74 inches.

300? awesome sounds good to me! lol but could prolly only fit that in a wall or something... 74 will be enough though I think... your not pumping 10kwrms to be moving 44mm excursion worth of air anyways

Use the second one
Also, the 44mm is peak-peak before the sub is damaged type xmax, actual one-way xmax will be far less..

so if i do make the splot ports are around 74 inches, it's then up to the slot ports length to determine the frquency to which the box will be tuned, thats where the second formula comes into play right??
what sized port are do you have ANDU and BASSOHOLIC??
wot you reccomend for or less them 74 inches?

bigger the better... but you don't want the port to end up to close to the bottom of the box so you can certainly go to big in your case.
I think mine is about 80sq in for 2 x 12's. biggest port i could fit without going slot. I haven't had much sucess with slots in the past... but i'm making a new box soon, gonna give them another shot.

hey andrew wot type of port do you have? round?
as for my box, this is how it is looking after using that calculator and all.
net internal volume is 3.99 cubes after port and speaker displacement.
the slot port will be 18.5" x 4" and have a total of 74 sq inches.
i will be 13.5 inches long, which will leave about 2.5 inches at the bottom on the box and the port. is that enough room?
or should i do a few more adjustments?
hows that sound??
to me it seems right in theory, but i have a feeling it may not work out as i expect it to

to much thought, not enough building! just build it and see what it does... is it gonna be ready for sunday?

hahah yeh exactly, too much talk and not enough action.
it should be done by then, i got all the timber cut to size at bunnings, so its just a matter of slappng it together, but i'm not 100% sure on how to go about making the slot port.
care to shed some light on how i would go about it??

If the port is 4" wide then you will need at least 4" between the back of the port and the other box walls.. 2.5" is too little room...

i find that those calculator things are BS.
i just go for the biggest box i can fit, and just randomly fit a big port in. my next box is going to be the rippedskin special design with ultimate big port should get me to my 160db mark
