Guy's
After talks between Gerry at NWS HiFi, Adrian at Car Accessory Installs, and myself, it has been decided to try and get the tassie spl scene up and running.
The initial plan is to commence holding competitions in conjunction with the tasasca events, but to run the spl as a dedicated event.
(The next Tasasca event is scheduled for the 6th of April at Burnie).
Adrian has kindly agreed to allow his pcrta to be set up at the Tasasca events, and this machine will be used only for running the spl side of the competition. This rta is fitted with a 170db mic and reads within a couple tenths of a db when compared to the autobarn meters, so it is quite accurate.
The rta is fitted with only one mic so we wont be able to do head to head drag racing, but we will be able to que the cars and do one after the other throughout the day, so you will be able to get plenty of runs in.
Details for things such as trophies, prizes, the entry fee, etc etc have yet to be finalised, and will be posted soon.
To get things up and running there will be three classes for spl competition. This will hopefully spread the cars somewhat evenly, but allow people to compete on a reasonably level playing field.
Tas A...2 X 10" or 1 X 12"
Tas B...3 X 10", 2 X 12" or 1 X 15"
Tas C...More than 1 X 15"
We will use a simple set of rules to run the spl events and these will get posted on the tasasca site soon, but if you would like a copy now, please drop me an email and I'll send you one.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Options, such as running regular spl only competitions in the Launceston area are being looked at and these events will be planned WELL in advance and advertised on the CAA and TASASCA websites.
cheers bluedog
ps. I talked to Rod at Launy Autobarn today, there is still no date for their competition at the moment.

yeah I'm up for this event, sounds like a strict Northern event!
Maybe we need to work harder for an event down in Hobart!!
How many Hobart entrants do you need to hold a comp down in Hobart for it to be worth while "Bluedog"???
And I know we have to crawl before we can walk but why aren't we adopting the same rules as the rest of the country???
Is there more to the classes' than just woofer size?

Earthquake,
Where the hell does it say anywhere that it is a "strict northern" event ?????????
Hopefully there will be heaps of cars from all over the state.
And I know we have to crawl before we can walk but why aren't we adopting the same rules as the rest of the country???
Wellllll, thats because there are no set rules throughout aussie at the moment.
Vic, Qld, Tas, Autobarn, db drag, have a look around there are heaps of different rules going.
Anyway these are a basic set of rules to get the show on the road, and we can always change them later if needed.
Is there more to the classes' than just woofer size?
No, tassie only has a fairly small spl vehicle population at the moment, if we go dividing what we have into too many classes we have the problem of not enough competitors in each class, and also there is a bigger expense for trophy/prizes.
Autobarn started out with just two classes !
Rules governing things like woofer walls, more/bigger batteries, highoutput alternators etc etc get quite complex.
So whatever class you want to compete in, if your serious and want to win, you do what it takes.
As for a Hobart competition, yep there will definately be one planned for the future, BUT we need to walk before we run.
Competitor support is the key, we need everyone to get the word around and have as many entries as possible.

I'll be there competing and I'll be in Tas A. I'll be building my car to Street A specs though so I can compete in mainland comps and mot have to change my set up for those comps. While the Tas classes are good may I suggest that consideration be given to using the CAAdB classes when they are finalised. I realise that we probably won't have enough cars to fill all classes but we could perhaps combine some of the classes. Just something to consider for the future.
Thanks bluedog for the effort you are going to organising this

Feb 10 2003, 11:48 AM
okay, If you need southern support to boost entry's I'll be happy to asist and try to make a SPL scene in Tasmania in gerneral.
As you will know one class will be heavily populated, the Tas A class will have the majority of entrants due to the combintion of woofer sizes presented in your post, I think if we have a smilar turnout like the USA day I think we should run more than 3 classes for 36+ cars.
The good thing abou SPL, younger ppl starting out wont be daunted about all the installation and presentation qualities that makes SQ such a difficult event to start in. PPL can enjoy and have fun regardless of what quality your installation is like!
three cheers for "Bluedog" for getting the ball rolling

Oh yeah big fella,
the competition at Burnie is being run in conjunction with a car show. Last year was the first time and there were heaps of people there. The site where it is held is excellent, grassy and large. It should be even bigger this year.

Finished fabricating the microphone holder today and it looks pretty good. It's got plenty of adjustment to accurately set the mic in the correct position.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How many of you guys would be interested in organising a get together at "Car Accessory Installs" to tune their car on the spl meter before the competition? Say within the next couple weeks(evening or weekend).
I'm thinking of a session to have a play with your cars tuning, ie box position, burp frequency, gain settings etc.
So if you are keen let us know ??? I think we might be able to sweet talk Adrian with a few beers or pizzas or something.
Whens the best time ??

I'd be tempted but it's a 5 hour drive each way for me so it would have to be on a weekend for me to even consider it. Hang on, I have to find a weekend to build my sub box. Better count me out, sorry. I'll be at the comp though.

they are primarily designed as SQ woofers but are known for being the best value for money woofer areound in america the specs are good and they are supposed to beat a type r in all respects and for $243 Us each i reckon they are the go it will be original and loud which is how i want it SPL is the way to go for me but the SQ of these will be a good side effect

OK
Adrian has kindly agreed to keep the shop open and let us test, tune and play with the rta on Saturday 22nd March. Normal closing is about 12 lunchtime, so we can kick off after that.
Test tone CD's will be available for testing tuning.
So anyone interested in a free tune up session and seeing what sort of numbers they can pull, is welcome to attend. (A sixpack or a pizza is always welcome)
It would be nice to have a bit of an idea of vehicle numbers, so post a reply if you are a definate or a maybe
Address is: Car Accessory Installs, Wellington St. Launceston

Theres no charge for the tune up afternoon on Sat 22nd. All you need to do is bring your car, we'll run the rta, and you do whatever you want to see if you can get it to go a bit louder.
The idea is to run each car, see what it can do and then do some tweaking, ie frequency, port length, position of the box, direction of the box, or whatever you want to try.
