Full Version: Advice on Alpine 15's & big Earthquake Monobloc Needed

A friend of mine is considering purchasing two of the current Alpine 15 inch Type R woofers and the Earthquake Monobloc amplifier to run them with.

His questions are;

a) Will the amp run these for street use regularly? (and not overheat...)

b) Will his Hyundai Excel be ok to run them? (it's the model before the current squareish shape) It's standard, decent battery though.

c) He likes the sound of 15's and wants two. Are there any other combos that you recommend?

Thank you all, Rich.

I take it he wants the Earthquake PH-D2?

you'd want Dual 2ohm subs, to suit that amp. Will give 1000wrms on tap to each 15. If those 15's are anything like the 12inch Type R's they'll take up to 800wrms. so 1000wrms on tap would be sweet.

Richie, anyone i know?
runing PHD2's at one ohm can be a bit of a problem, i'd be inclined to run 2 dual 2ohm 15's in series/parallel, for a 2ohm load to a PHD2, that would be fairly reliabel and have enough power to go loud,
get him to listen to my brahma, usually converts those 15" punks...
a pair fo basshead's magma's would do the same job... and they're going at an excellent price!!

2ohm for daily and load down to 0.5ohm for burps

Did somebody say Magma ? .
I got told on Saturday arvo that the car "sounds like a bomb going off" playing music at an elevated level.. guess thats what I get for playing 'Boogie Man' at 3/4 volume

Oh and some answers for your Q's:
- Feeding the amp enough juice will be an issue
- 1ohm + D2 = trouble in most cases (not all.. but we dont want to be a statistic now do we ?)

i run type r 15's
run one per 1507 amp but the other day hooked them up to the earthquake d2 2 subs 1 amp (mine are svc 4 ohm) so hooked it up 2 ohm mono ran only 1 db lower than the 2 alpine 1507 amps !!
hope this helps . run the subs in sealed boxes

Mr Bob- it's one of James' friends, his name is Antony. Jame's as in Cristo's friend.

He says that the system will be a weekender with the odd bit of mid-week use as well. He is said to be only looking at the idea of SPL, but I'll invite him over for a BBQ with a few guys for a chat and gee-up and he'll soon be competing...

He's a sensible guy, he knows there's no point in havin' a big bass slammer for the back streets and whatchin' guys like Hardon walk away with more SPL trophies now is there?

I can see Ant gettin' a bit more serious than that!

What about the Earthquake subs? what if he got two of those with the monobloc? I like the Magma idea, Richard runs these and does well I see...

HEY DJ!!!!
(where's the bass???)

You guys should build a car to beat me, that would be great!!!!

(A car audio system that's still winning after 6 years with exactly the same gear...priceless.)

yeah I've noticed, that's what inspired my choice of subs, quite happy with mine too, (that's where it's at) eventhough they're only the SPL's.

I'm getting there with mine, front stage is in except for the 5's as i want to move them. Amps and stuff are in bar the 3401.
Remaining jobs are rear fill and half the wiring, as well as the trim plates that go over it all.

you never know with Ant though, he's a bass lover where as i'm more a loud overall sound Q but with decent bass kinda guy. He'll take the SPL game on I'm sure...

Rich.

Sweet!

then there's the some other biggies too... I found a review in US Car Audio & Electronics Mag of February 2002.

They tested a pair of Crossfire VR1000D amps wired together in mono, a US Amps USA200X, a Zapco C2K 9.0XD and the Earthquake PH-D2...
Very interesting article, on face value I would go the Zapco but $US2199.00 is alot of dough. The Earthquake on the other hand is $US999.00.
For this kind of cash I'd look at a pair of MRV1507's and get change...

Any thoughts on the above mentioned amps or others we've missed?

breaking news:

The following has been purchased:

Alpine Type R splits
Alpine MRV F540 to run them active with.
Alpine Type R 15" DVC subs
Alpine MRD M500 x2 to run each sub.
and the funky controller to them tweak with.

now comes the power supply issue, he has a spare altenator and can have it re-wired, however i've heard that this is 'unstable' and shortens the life of the altenator. There is also the second battery idea.

What other ideas and thoughts do people have???
Maz
If that is for a street setup you could just get a big $400 primary battery and that should handle the whole system.

What is the current alternator? if its 100amp then runnign 0 gauge to teh boot with a big battery should be enough.
