i'm about to get a new HDD, so i'm wondering what OS to go for, i've got every windows OS except NT, and i'm currently running ME, but i'd like some feedback

my system is as follows:

AMD K6-2-500
64mb PC100 SDRAM
8mb onboard vid card
(on order) 40gb WD IDE HDD, 8mb cache

i manly use the computer for 'net purposes and playing MP3's

For your purposes I voted 98 but only cos there wasn't an XP option tongue.gif
tomic
id stick with 98se.
and id suggest some more ram smile.gif
Get more ram and win2k would be my first suggestion. If you are playing games stick with 98se.

Maybe cause he only has 64mb ram :tony:

With the system you have best to keep with winME.

Definately go for some more memory first up.

WINME is evil! Sticking with your current specs i would go with 98SE.

I dont understand y ppl keep recommending him to stay with Win98se when it states WinME :tony: Win98se can be just as evil esp with memory leaks hahaha.
tomic
his poll has 3 options 98SE/ME/2000
WRXCORE
Win2k is winning hahaha.

not now it's not tongue.gif bahahah 2k on 64M of ram... /me zzzzzzzz's - my work box has enough issues with 256M!
Interceptor
i know ME doesnt have that many issues running on 64mb
snm
1) XP
2) 2000
3) NT
4) ME / 98se

Out of the choices you have there, and going by you pc specs, i would have to say defiently 98SE smile.gif

Winme = crap (always has been, always will be, ask any I.T "professional" wink.gif )

Winxp = a decent os/ but a big no in your case. I wouldnt even install Winxp on a pc with anything less then 256mb ram, and even then, i would be upgrading to 512mb to get some decent speed out of it.

Win2k = also a good o/s (it has to be my fav o/s), but once again i wouldnt install it on your pc unless you upgrade the ram to at least 256mb.

Winnt = Dont even go there, this was never meant to be a "mainstream user" o/s. Since you dont have the install cd, you wont even need to worry about it smile.gif

Installing 98SE should give you decent speed, whilst still allowing you to use most current pieces of software. If you want to install a newer o/s, i say its time for a hardware upgrade smile.gif

N.B - Whilst it would be possible to install 2k/xp onto your pc, but its going to run sooooooooo slow that it wouldnt be funny smile.gif
WRXCORE
Well I was guessing you were going to just add the HDD, but then I recalled that your other one was having problems. If your going for an all new install then you could do Win98SE(with win98lite) but if you never had problems with WinME, why change?

Dragon: Are these the same IT professionals that are now currently unemployed :tony:

LOL, i guess im one of the lucky ones who still has a job in I.T smile.gif
dasherhalo
Bah - you should have let me know this in advance, i would thrown in a 64mb ram stick for free!
128 ain't fantastic, but it's great compared to 64!!!
DrEvil
98se purely cause of the speed it will run...

I remember when i first installed ME i had many issues and ended up deleting it after a week tongue.gif Maybe it was my "backup" copy that was the problem though tongue.gif

ahhh tell me about it, the bloody thing crashed on me at least once per day. used it for about a week then just used win2000
Rattlehead
I must've been one of the lucky ones who hasn't had a problem with WinME.
KraSE
but a stick of ram and go 2k smile.gif

ram isn't "THAT" $$$
Interceptor
krase, it is when you've got a list of more pressing things that need your attention
1:telstra, $193
2:power, $216
3:new battery, $100-150
4:new windscreen $265
5:rego $?
RockfordMini
with just 64mb RAM i'd stick with win98se, if u upgrade u're ram, anything above 256mb ram with 98 gets really unstable and has problems, in which case 2000 would be the best pick. As for ME, it's the biggest f*** up of an abomination that microsoft has ever even thought of designing and releasing into paying customers hands, i'd rather go back to 3.11 than that, (being a techie) i've never seen another OS with so many problems
DRAGON
lol, i agree with you there rockford mini... stick 512mb into a 98/me machine and watch how quick it crashes (a few reg tweaks may help tho wink.gif ) i still think that in terms of decent speed, his cpu is too slow for win2k (but thats just my personal preference). So as myself, and alot of others have mentioned (including you tongue.gif), Win98SE is the O/S to pick biggrin.gif

you mean i've been living on the daily baked bean diet when i can possibly afford to eat a packet of noodles a day? laugh.gif

can i afford the flavour sachet too, or is that dessert? sad.gif

Hrm, Id probably choose 98 simply because you aint got much ram....

Also, I have a LOT of customers who use ME and not one of them has had a problem with it.... unless of course they decide to delete the program files directory to save space

if i hadnt had a friend delete command.com from her HDD, i wouldnt believe it........

anyway, after trying to install ME and hitting a brick wall with it refusing to accept a verification code i have used before, i've installed 98SE and everything is going fine (apart from taking 6 hours to reinstall everything and download the required drivers)

thanks to everyone who've given thier advice here, and a big thanks to dasherhalo for supplying my new HDD
