Full Version: Big 2 channels

I'm after a big power 2 or 4 channel (minimum of 350wrms x 2 or 200wrms x 4 all at 4ohm). Preferably 4 channel so i can play around with running active.

They will be powering Titanium Elites in the short term and possibly Z6's if I find the elites are not to my liking. The Elites handle 300wrms so I would like to give them a bit of head room.

I would rather it be freely available on the U.S market so i can look into importing, this is because I honestly have very very little to spend (under 1K)

Please make suggestions though even if its slightly over 1K if its worthy.

I've looked at PG, Audison, Tru Tech and Soundstream, and the only amps that have really stood out are the Soundstream tarrantula's, however i've heard that the newer ones are highly inferior in both build quality and suond quality.

I would love to get a Boston but they are too expensive in australia at the moment and i cannot find an online retailer who stocks boston amps.

any help would be great!

i've been looking at PG Titanium Specs, and the Ti 400.2 jumps out to be a possible option, 400wrms x 1 @ 4ohm, a pair of them, one on each side would be very nice i think. Could also run active if i wanted to with 100wrms x 2

100watst RMS x 4 at 4ohms or
360watts RMS x 2 at 4ohms.

Been benchtested, and proven to produce it's rated output.

don't be mistaken into thinking you need 'RMS' power for headroom.

then consider 'reality': for music, you utilise little RMS power to make most splits play loudly; even if rated to 300WRMS, i'd be suprised if you actually used more than 100WRMS for daily use, and 200WRMS for 'uncomfortably loud' performance.

in terms of headroom, that's catered for by peak power outputs (well ok, that's my definition of it biggrin.gif ). a nice high peak output will be useful to cope with the dynamics of music and transient loud passages, say with the crash of some symbals, etc. any high quality amp will have heaps of headroom well above its RMS power output.

given this, you may be either wasting money on power you won't ever utilise or be spending money on power and compromising on SQ, built quality, reliability, etc. so no point having 350WRMS on tap; you'll only trim the gains to drive them cleanly and not distort; this will effectively cap the power output of the amp to within the handling limitations of the splits themselves, and probably no where near 350WRMS (esp if you dial in more midbass by using a low HP xover point).

if possible, audition the splits and note what power amp they are being run off. see if that's powerful enough for you; it will give some guidance as to what you may require. but remember if you audition in a showroom, it's a big showroom, and won't sound as loud as if you tranfered that same setup into the confines of a car.

anyway, i personally wouldn't compromise on quality over power. as i listen to my stereo at low-mod levels and use only small amounts of power, which is a fraction of what's on tap. so i know there's no point having a more powerful amp cos i'll never use that power.

thanks for the comments shiny, a different approach is always very helpful.

I will definately give them a run off my LRX 2.500 then, its not the most gutsy amp in the world but as you said, aslong as they go loud enough for daily driving then its all that is needed.

I just have a fetish for headroom/huge amounts of power tongue.gif

Should of brought mine when I had them up for sale :hehe: They were the best amps i've ever had! Great SQ and bucket loads of headroom!

What do you mean when you say that the newer Soundstream Tarantula amps are both inferior in sound qual and build qual? There has only been one range of these amps. SS brought out the original mono amp 5 years ago after a looonnnggg introduction, and then brought out the matching 2, 4 and 5 ch T series in 2003. It is still the same range now. They are built by the same company who builds the Powerclass PPI amps. Yes, in Korea.

The SS Rubicon II is a cleaner sounding amp in my opinion, still built by SS engineers in the USA. Also not having such an expensive heatsink design keeps the price well below that of the T series.

Perhaps the inferior ones are fakes?

I have heard of one only fake Tarantula amp in Australia, but never saw it.
Chances are its just bad information. There is plenty of that getting around.
