Full Version: Remote Mounting The Tweeter In a Small Car???

I posted This question about two weeks ago, it magically disapeared, along with my other topics, so please re-answer, because i didn't get a chance to read any post's to it. Cheers.

I currently run a set of MB Quarts Splits in the front of my Mazda 323 AstinaSP, with the tweeter mounted about 1 inch away from the mid-bass, and they give a very crisp & precise music image. However, being a small car, when i take a passenger their legs tend to block the bright sound due to the position of the tweeter. my only idea is to mount the tweeter near the dash, but i have heard that doing that will give a split image and make the sound quality terrible. I have a Pioneer DEX-P1 head unit which allows time alignment, but i cannot setup this feature as i am running 3 amps, and i need 4. I am after sound quality, but it really effects the sound when i take a passenger, which is frequent for me.

I have changed the way the tweeter sits in it's pod, but not much difference. i feel it has to be moved from so low in the door, next place to mount is dash though.

What is people's opinon on remote mounted tweeters. Should it be done, or should i just sacrifice the work of tweeter when i ride with a passenger???

CAA audiophile 'critter' has an SP20, so it will be interesting to hear his thoughts.

it will probably be a compromise between optimal soundstaging/imaging and clearance from your passenger.

if you can, use some long speakerwires to your tweets, and experiment with their positions. try them up higher in the doors or on the dash and compare. use blu-tac or double sided tape to help hold them in position temporarily.

the problems of 'separation' are often only minor and not too stark. so you may find having the tweets up higher creates no significant loss in SQ.

relocating the tweeter may not possibly solve your problems.

I'm guessing your mb quarts component set are 2-way? If so, then when you have a passenger and they are blocking the mid, chances are the midrange will be affected as well (most noticably the voices). I don't know how low the mb quarts tweeter is crossed at, however many components are highpassed at 3 to 3.5khz which is past most of the midrange area. At that point onwards, its mostly 'brilliance' (best way I can describe it really...) that is played by the tweeters.

Relocating the tweeters will only help a little bit in terms of staging and imaging, its the crucial midrange that you should be thinking of relocating if imaging and staging is your ultimate goal.

tweeters up high shouldn't have big seperation problems, attenuating the tweeter lower (if the crossover allows) can help with this.
