Full Version: Looking at Upgrading splits

Hello, i am contemplating upgrading my DLS ultimate Pro 6.5" speakers. Currently i have 2 pairs in a VT Calais and am only looking for 2 Way 6.5" splits!!!

I want something that will remain just as loud (mine are rated at 150wrms) and still have the clarity.

Choices so far seem to include the Boston Pro's, Z6's PG Titanium Elites and DLS Iridiums.

Now the DLS iridiums have 100wrms rating so my guess is that they wont go loud..

I heard Dynaudio's wont go very loud which sort of rules them out...

I read a very informative review on epionionsi think, stating that the Z6s while soundng much better then the 'bright' pros arent quite as loud (which seems odd for a 3ohm 200wrms speaker...)

Now i love my DLS ultimate pros, and it would have to be a signifficant sound upgrade to improve upn these (personally i think the DLS ultimate reference sounds no where near as good..)

Any opinions???? each pair will be run off an Alpine Mrv-1005,s o power aint the issue smile.gif

I think you'd find that Dynaudio's can play just as loud as your current DLS's. I've been using a pair of Dyns for 12 months now, and I can tell you that they play extremely loud, in fact, I'm yet to hear a pair of 2-way splits that are able to play as loud, while still retaining the amount of control that the dyn's do.

Don't get too wrapped up in power ratings, even though the dyn's have a rating of just 100W, myself and many other users on this forum have happily fed dyns 200-300wrms, and they handle it just fine.

Also, I recently auditioned a pair of DLS Iridiums. They sounded very nice, but I felt they were lacking in midbass. It's my belief that the Iridiums are designed moreso for pure sound quality, rather than just to play loud. Not to say they won't play loud, but I think they may not be suited to your needs.

I haven't heard the Boston's or PG's, but plenty of members here have used Boston Pro's and the general opinion seems to be that they are great quality and able to play quite loud.

All of the splits you've listed are top quality, I think it would come down to which pair sound the best to you. I don't think you need to worry about the power handling of any of them, and definately not the dyns.

what do you find lacking in the dls splits you have now? it will help you focus on what you're after in your upgrade. it may also mean you won't need to spend $2K to find what you want. smile.gif

it's a total misconception that dyn's need heaps of power to go loud. they can certainly go uncomfortably loud with high power if you want. but i currently run my system240 splits off 2 channels of my VRx6.420. they are rated at 75WRMS and VRx amps are not renowned for being particularly underrated powerwise. they are plenty loud with this amount of power. beforehand, i had them running off my VRx2.150 with 110WRMS on tap per channel; they went uncomfortably loud then! smile.gif

so i wouldn't discount them on this wives' tale.

there's plenty of excellent splits available. worth considering relatively 'cheap' stuff too:
*alpine SPX-177A: bargain at RRP$699 IMO
*diamond audio M6 series splits: awesome midrange, better than my dyn's

otherwise, add to your list the upcoming morel 'hybrid ovations' and 'elates'. not that i've auditioned them yet, but i've seen them (passive xovers are top quality) and promise to sound excellent.

i havent got any real problems with the speakers, i have great mid-bass output. Got 2 layers of dynamat in the front doors and 1 layer in the back so that aint the problem smile.gif

my splits rattle the mirror without the subbies on smile.gif

anyways I think my DLS splits have a very flat laid back sort of Dyn sound to them, they arent the least bit bright, if anything a bit more wont hurt smile.gif

im not too keen on feeding speakers 3 times the power even if they could handle it, cause i know eventuallly they wont be happy, and tweeters are generally quite expensive to replace (as i have learnt)

price wont be too much of an issue (baring in mind i want 2 pairs) as long as i think I can justify the extra SQ or volume.

With higher end speakers i think it would be pretty safe to trust the ratings provided???? so im guessing i should look for higher sensitivty ratings???

Would 150wrms speakers with lets say 88db sensitity (i think mine are near this...) be louder then lets say 120wrms with 92db sensitivity??

I know the differences would be fairly minor but i do enjoy listening to my car when i get home with all doors open (dont have problems of neighbours etc..) and enjoy concert volumes. I dont go driving with this sort of volume mind you smile.gif

thanks for the help!!!

if they follow the usual rules, then no. a 3dB increase in sensitivity would correlate with requiring half the power to achieve the same volume. given the 4dB increase in sensitivity, they would need less than 75WRMS to achieve the same volume. so having the ability to handle 120WRMS suggests they should go louder.

don't know if it's as simple a correlation as that or not. and i may be totally wrong. biggrin.gif

hopefully auditioning all your options will find the splits and sound you're after.

the problem with auditioning splits in SA is that they connect them up to the bottom end amps (if at all) and distort them thinking their mad smile.gif

why does speaker choice have to be so complicated :hehe:
Ole'
yep, Sa sucks for auditioning splits... well anything car audio related sad.gif

however i do love my Boston Pros

depending on buget but a/d/s is very good, also check out morels new gear.

my a/d/s splits go to uncomfortably loud and very low
claf_43
how much do some a/d/s splits go for, cant say i have looked into them too much

Then again if in adelaide its DLS, Boston or nothing

You can get Dyns from Complete Audio, and I think GT Autosound does A/D/S....
claf_43
neither have them on demo boards do they?
STIK79
Complete at TTG used to have dyns in their board (240MkII IIRC) but they sounded bloody awful lol... (running in trimode off of a z4000 I think)
claf_43
i heard them once and have been scared off dyn since smile.gif

all it takes is once!!!

side question, to the SA people (like you claf_43 tongue.gif ) how are the DLS Ultimate References in comparison to the Ultimate Pro's.
PM me with brief review if you can tongue.gif
east_bay_punk
a/d/s have 3 levels of speakers.
this is for 2-way 6.5" splits
2 series $999RRP
3 series $1599RRP
Pro series $3599RRP

there is a fair bit of mark up with them, i picked up the 3 series for a little over $1200
claf_43
gee thank god their cheap smile.gif

anyway I have heard the DLS ultimate reference in several situations, 2 different boards and in a very expensive 200sx. While running off the board these sounded miserable, they were very hissy. This may have been cause of the lesser amps being used (DLS Classic 50wrms as opposed to DLS Ultimate A3 150wrms) However the Ultimate Pros sounded much bettre on the boards, they seemed to have a clearer high.

The Ultimate reference had a very meaty sound though, just didnt sound natural which DLS prides itself on smile.gif

My pros love power, go very loud, and wont hurt the ears with thier crystal clear highs, i have hige mid bass from them. They just seem a lot cleaner overall.

Also the reference are signigifficantly more and i cant see where the price comes in.

Soon i will be demoing a pair of Iridiums next to the Pros (both on board off same amp and deck) From what i heard of the iridiums before they werent that much better to warrant an upgrade (their $700 more)
