hey everyone,

i am looking for help in understanding the numbers and ohmages ect ect. involved with speakers and subwoofers. i am looking for SQ speakers as opposed to SPL.

i have heard good things from focal, jl audio and alpine.

what do people reccomend and also is there any charts to help explain what to look for.

thanks in advance.

Specs and features won't really tell you how a particular set of speakers will sound - you will have to listen to them and see what you like the best.

Different materials in the construction of the speakers will also affect sound.

yeah, specs may be more important with subwoofers where you want to design your own subbox and know what fits and works.

most splits are 4ohm impedence, so consider what power your amp produces driving 4ohm loads to determine if the amp will be suitable (usually is).

enclosures are far less critical for splits if you mount the woofers in the doors. midrange driver and tweets usually require nothing special here.

therefore, as RTTZ says, your auditioning opinion is what's important. and when you do audition, play music you're familiar with, audition as many as you can, cheap and expensive, and note what amp they're being driven by (try and have them driven by an amp similar in quality and power to your own).

if you do want to know about specs and how they relate to subs, then...it's complex and mostly beyond me! but we can answer that as necessary.

"SQ Speaker what to look for?

How i would go about buying speakers if I was to do it again (rated in terms of most important being first).

1. Listen
2. Ask current owners their opinions.
3. Investigate the construction materials (I'm very much a fan of paper cones over plastic).
4. Chek out their frequency resopnce charts (flatter is generally better).

have a look at a/d/s subs, i heard none were being brought in anymore about 4 months ago but now there are new distrobutors so you may be lucky.
adire audio brama is also a very nice sq sub with big excusion and goes very low
i have run a JL12W3 V2 and it sounded good for a sub of $350, was a good bang for bucks sq sub.
