Full Version: 3 times the power for low mount tweets

Hey all

Someone was telling me the other day that if i mounted my tweeters in the kickpanels down with the mid drivers, (as opposed to high up on the door or side pods near the windshield), i would require 3 times the power in order for them to sound as full or powerful.

I was just wondering if this is true.

Cheers

Not true at all! Where you place the tweeter has nothing to do with how much (amplifier) power they will need to sound good in that particular location.

You've heard my car and I have my tweets in the kicks and they only get their recommended wattage.

not totally untrue. if you consider that dashtop tweets can sound brighter, you may end up requiring 6dB attenuation. that's a quarter of the power going to them there. a 3dB attenuation is like halving the power.

kickkpanel tweets don't sound so bright, so rarely need attenuating. so relatively speaking, it may work out to around 3x the power difference.

however, putting it into perspective, tweets tend to be quite sensitive, so it would be a rare occasion that you have insufficient power to drive them regardless of position.

a very general rule for attenuation (if you don't notice brightness when kickpanel mounting)

set tweeter attenuation on 0dB when the mids are close to the tweeter
if the mids are down low and tweeter is up high, attenuate more.

you may notice some seperation, but thats only what I've noticed anyway...

A better way to think of it is that, when the tweeters are placed high up where there will be noticable sound reflections, you may need as little as one third the power as you would when they are placed in the doors or kick panels. The same, yet different.
