Guys..

I'm in the market for a set of 3 way splits up front.

Looking for a set that has awesome SQ but in particular, very defined (and perhaps a bit louder than usual) midbass.

I was considering some Focal K3P's...but I've heard that they are rather lacking in the midbass department. Somebody please correct me if they believe that's not the case.

I'd prefer something that would run off around 200wrms, costs less than $2000 and has a mounting depth that will not require me to cut up my car doors (It's a 200sx..so not a lot of room in there).

Any recommendations would be great...retail prices would be good too..

Thanks!

quality midbass will depend a lot on a quality installation. the door woofer needs to be mounted into what is essentially a solid, sealed enclosure. in the same way a sub performs poorly if the so-called 'sealed' enclosure is flimsy and leaky, so too will a midwoofer.

so to convert the door into that, you need extensive sound deadening, sealing of major air leaks (ie: panels over service holes) and a solid woofer mounting/baffle. then you'll get good midbass!

splits worth considering:
*dynaudio system340/360: the 360 uses the 8" woofer for added doof; RRP$1399/1499 respectively
*phoenix gold elite series
*focal K-power 165K3P: whilst i haven't auditioned them, the older K3 set were very good IMO
*morel: expect a new 3-way setup soon: hybrid and elate series
*boston accoustic pro 6.5.3 $1299

i currently run the dyn system240 2-way setup with the 7" woofers. midbass is very good, so the 3-ways will be as good and better with the 8".

but plenty of high quality splits to choose from.

I will get back to you regarding your three ways Rick, once I get better. tongue.gif

Shiny car...doors should be pretty good..Marty was the man responsible for deadening them. I know i could use a bit more though...might do that when i save up enough for my upgrade to 3 ways.

Marty..thanks mate.. As i mentioned before though, no rush. I don't intend to do it til around midway this year, just gathering some thoughts first so i can plan amp upgrades and stuff as well.

Since you've got the time, check out the Rainbow Profi and Profi Vanadium Kickbass 3 ways. I think those will suit your needs for more mid bass.

Talk to Marty about these - you should be able to listen to a 3 way Profi Vanadium Kickbass pretty soon in NSW.

Mohan.

MB Quart have 3 NEW models to choose from. They will be arriving mid March. (Q Line in April). All feature 6", 4" and tweeter.

Reference RCE364. RRP $799
Premium PCE364. RRP $1199
Q Line QSD364. RRP $2299

Quart 3 ways were legendary in the sound off scene all over the world a few years back and now they are coming again.... Cant wait.

I would be a good idea to drive the midbass drivers of whatever speakers you choose off seperate amp channels. You can dial in your midbass seperately form the mid / tweet. You seem concerned about strong midbass.

Personally I'd make a three way set from a great midbass driver and high end component set. I'd definately go active from midbass to the component set. Passives work quite well from mid to tweet.

This way you can control the level of the midbass driver, this amount of control often rules out the need for an external EQ.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, try and have a listen to our DD W6.5, I've never heard bass from a car door like they can deliver. They sound as good as any high end European driver, but handle power like none of them can.

AJF83 runs a pair per door, with a Boston GT28, that's 450Wrms a side. After some sub amp dramas, he tried the doors FULL RANGE, the 6.5s take every bit of that power all the way down.

Everyone who's heard the bass in his car (from the door mids mind you) has been blown away.
