well i have read in the manual for my 9815 Hu that it wil play music encoded at 48khz aswell as the standard 44.1, now i was wondering how much difference is there, and is it worth while me doing this will all music still be played like it was before? and will it make mp3.s any better?

all info appreciated?

No point going to 48khtz unless your source is in 48khtz, and since most cd's are 44.1 then stay 44.1

In all honestly upsampling to 48 would probably drop the quality. Why? 1) you're modifing the source. 2) A higer sampling rate means you have less bits per htz which means more noticeable mpeg compression.

on the otherhand if you riped a audio from a dvd source it could be slighty better. coreect me if im wrong.

RE you're point (B) the number of bits has no relevence to Hz the number of bits simply equates to the number of voltage levels that can be represented... sampling frequency is simply 2x the maximum capturable frequency (nyquist theory) so using a 48Khz sampling rate you can capture upto 24Khz whereas the typical sampling rate of 44.1K =22.05KHz which is considered fine due to the fact the generally accepted audible range is 20Hz-20Khz

Also, most mp3 encoders are not tuned for 48khz, depending on bitrate and encoder tuning, the lowpass will often be a lot lower than 24khz.

(more bandwidth requires a higher bitrate. On lower bitrates, a lower low-pass is used to allow for more bits in the rest of the range, resulting in less distortion)

Anyway, if you want quality MP3s, I assume you are already encoding with lame --preset standard. (or extreme, or insane if you are willing to have larger files)

(standard is tuned for the sweet spot of quality vs size)

yeah i was jsut wondering if i could rip them at 48 and if ti would make and noticable difference over the 44 other then file size?as i have no idea what has been said in this thread lol.(dumbass)
