Hello everyone and happy easter.
I have been running a pair of the PG tantrum 6.5" component speakers up front in an ED Ford Falcon off a PGti 600.2 amp supplying 150WRMS per side and loved the sound except for a lack of midbass.
I recently blew one of my woofers and it got me thinking about what to do now. I have 2 of the PG ti600.2's to use to power my front stage and was thinking of spending around $750 to $1500 on new speakers. I was thinking of doing something like using one of the amps to run set of 5.25" components and then using the other amp to run a pair of 8"woofers in the doors. As for brands etc. i need recommendations, any advice would be excellent.
Thanks guys

can anyone offer advice? somebody must have done this before, a pair of splits and then 2 8"s up front, a semi-active system?

The addition of a dedicated midbass certainly improves this aspect, but at the cost of other things. For a start, the installation gets far more complicated and you may end up having to sacrifice the ideal position of the midrange and tweeter thanks to the midbass requiring so much room. You also have greater chance of frequency response anomalies with adverse phase issues between speakers at crossover points.
I like to try and keep the number of speakers to a minimum - with most cars achieving a great result with a simple 3-way set up. Maybe look at a set of really nice 2-way sets using 6.5-inch or larger mids. There are a few companies that offer these.

In my opinon.
I would stick to a simple set of splits.
GO and audition some.
YOu have a healthy budget.
COncentrate on getting them set up properly in pods and getting your doors throughly deadend.
I think that 150wrms a side is reasonable power and if you really wanted you could bridge the amp to run each side.
Where you located?

I say if you can...
Run some 8"
go and buy yourself a set of 3 way splits alltho 6.5" woofers when in the right enclosure and right mounting can offer a fair bit of midbass.. theres only so much a 6.5" can do.... if you have the money and the room in you kicks for some 5 1/4 inch speakers and can put 8" in you doors then go for it

im up in newcastle most weekends but i work in / live in sydney during the week so i can shop around down there as well. Im thinking of just buying a nice set of 3ways and running one amp for each side to give a healthy 300WRMS a side. How much impact on SQ would bridging these amps have? (yup i know thats a classic debate topic hehehe) and would there be much of a point feeding those morels 300WRMS a side?

I like your idea, and think an 8 would do exactly what you are looking to acheive. Any phase issues can be minimised by angling speakers as little as 15 degrees . Not a problem if you are doing build outs for 8s.
As for freq issues at crossover points, that shouldnt be an issue in a properly tuned semi active set up, although you would proably wanta little underlap rather than over lap, and an RTA is probably best way to set ti up to avoid these issues, if your not highly experienced. Im sure some of the more experienced NSW crew would help out if you are struggling.
Anyway 3 ways are a great option IMO and wont leave you with lack of midbass issues
