those are 2 i have heard and i think are rather nice
claf_43
you aint going to get Boston Pros for $500...

however rallies are very good!!!!!!
chrisjay
i tried out some alpine type r 6.5s and i like em very much biggrin.gif

If you like the type R, you will love the SPX177A speakers ALOT, but their rrp is 699. If you are good at haggling and increase the budget a little bit then these are the go.

If you're looking around the $500 mark I would look at Diamond M6's. They cost a little more (around $650 I think) but they sound way better than the boston rallies for example.

or you could always buy my near new boston pros for $600

diamonds are pretty good value

U can get Focal Polyglass for $500 and they sounded bloody good on the sound wall, yet to install em yet though.

They get good reviews everywhere esp if u like fairly smooth, natural sound.

Don't spend more on a split if it means u can't afford to install it properly, will make more differnece i reckon! (Although what do the rest of you think? $500 for splits plus $150 for deadening and pods, or $600 splits with $50 for install!?!)

wht you need to do is several things. firstly, by this months copy of Australian INCAR Entertainment, issue 62. There is a huge comparison of splits in there! 16 pairs were tested in total, ranging from $130 pair of audiobanks to $1499 pair of DLS Ultimate Iridiums. Don't forget that these are RRP only as car audio shops will always ultimately be cheaper than the indicated prices.

The next thing you need to do is weed out the ones you definitely cant afford i.e. the DLS Ultimates. Then, arm yourself with the magazine in hand and go to all the audio shops to try and sample as many as possible.

Don't always exclude the ones out of your $500 budget instantly, as in many cases, sometimes you end up regretting not forking out hat extra 50 bucks or waiting a bit later to have the money to buy the ones you really wanted..

People are always selling their splits on this forum(and other places) much cheaper than in the shops, such as PIMPIN tryin to flog his Boston pros for 600 to you already!! you see.. 600 is his RRP. as i said above.. this is not always the indicated price... so talk him down to 450.. then meet him at 500.. and make him throw in postage!

boston pros are great speakers. i heard them but i liked the focal k2power range too. i heard these on a board recently too, in the same shop.

musical tastes vary amongst people as well so dont forget to sample different genres of music when you go and listen to these speakers. if possible, burn.. i mean.. back up.. some of your favourite tracks.. as many genres as possible.. and take them in with you to sample.. one of the things i found difficult with a shop environment is that all hte speakers are mounted on a board and it it is more difficult to judge their staging and imaging capabilities.. so thats a bit of a hit or miss..

andres also raised a pretty important point. sound deadening will make the world of difference to how your speakers sound. if you factor in this cost, i dont think youd have much to spend would you lol. i think in the majority of cars, you are going to need pods for splits, as splits in this price range are of better quality than lower end ones, they have better build qualities and materials such as larger magnets which require deeper mounting. so i think you need pods regardless

but to answer your question andres, i think that.. a pair of boston pros in a pair of pods would still sound better than a pair of.. say typ R 6.5s with sound deadening properly applied to a door.

having said all of the above, i liked the Focal 165K2Ps alot, but alas, with a RRP of $880 i was pretty dissapointed my a$$ doesnt manufacture anything of monetary value. Even at a bit over 700 at a few places, they were still out of my range, even at 670 shipped from the states i couldnt do it. I was about to settle on a pair of MB Quart Premium series PC216 splits, but i got a private message as i have previously expressed interest in focal speakers.

i ended up getting a pair of 3 month old 165K2Ps shipped to me for 500 bucks (aftert haggling of course!) from a fellow forum user. i only just paid for them so i will let you know when i install them on how they go. all i need now is.. pods..a decent 2 channel amp to run them off.. and alot of deadening!! so dont expect to hear from me for another 6 mths about them! no need to say, im already over th moon with my purchase!!

anyways, geez i cant believe i typed all this raving sh][T in around 5 minutes!! i hope its a help to you .. good luck with your purchase.. and remember.. be patient..

Kind regards,

Kent

there is another way to look at this

maybe look at the boston ralley series and then spend the rest of your money on install

sound deadening the doors and custom tweeter and midrange mounting makes a huge difference
