Full Version: That damn box! ported or sealed?

Ok big decision here, do i go ported or sealed?

12" X-One

now i have 2 options here:

Ported:
2.6cft
51"^2 of port
tuned to 34hz

Sealed:
~1-1.5cft

I have no idea which one to chose, and my boot install is riding on which design i use (small boot)
VL Commy
ported olie, PORTED!!
Slider
deffinatly go the ported smile.gif
Ole'
bah gone for 1.5cft sealed tongue.gif

Calculate the drivers Efficiency Bandwidth Product by its Fs by its Qes. Numbers lower than 50 indicate sealed is ideal, numbers higher than 90 indicate ported is ideal, between 50 and 90, you choose.

Fs/Qts ~ 77 (I prefer to use Qts over Qes). So it is suited to both. The suspension is quite stiff, so it is suited to smallish sealed as well as smallish ported boxes, but the port lengths work out to be pretty long (it needs a bit more port area than an average sub..)
Fudd
slider, muz Bass Zone here

get back there!!!

olie, this is SQ Sealed all the way biggrin.gif
VL Commy
Fudd.... i do believe ported can sound just as good as sealed in SQ applications. I'm yet to prove it myelf, but IM A BELIEVER DAMMIT!!
Ole'
design, make and ship over a box and i will test it muz smile.gif
VL Commy
I'll design an build u a box.
u can pay for it tho Biatch!!
Fudd
ported can sound good, Critters L7 ported box was a damn fine example of it,
but if you dont get it spot on, hello one note wonder! (read SPL)

sealed are just idiot proof, i have built 5 - 6 box's for a few different subs all sealed and only one was a bit dodgy.

as long as the internal size is right whamo it sounds good, plays all the freq it can.

ported, well u gotta f*** around with the port tuning, building the damn port etc, sooo much work

SQ is bad enough spending so much money on quality gear, the last thing u wanna do is spend all ya time building a box that will probly wont sound as good as a sealed box biggrin.gif

oh and sealed usaly take up less space

I think that is why Olie has decided on the sealed box. :hehe:

where did you pull that from????????

bandpass is not that different from a ported box (cmon ppl flame me on this one tongue.gif )

there a tuned box! usaly only good for SPL and even then not an easy thing to do, tuning is 1000x's harder than porting, then u get port noise etc

next CAA meet you come to, ill give you a listen to my gf's car, you will change you mind about how low a sealed box can play (read: as low as the sub can go!)

ill play some 5hz sine waves for ya biggrin.gif
bob
Sorry to say but my ported Magma played a hell of a lot lower than your bandpass...

I agree with ya.. smile.gif

I had something to say about this in another thread and noone had anything much to say tongue.gif

i had the same problem the yesterday, (whether to go sealed or ported). smile.gif

I talked it over with some experts for a long time and they managed to convince me that ported wil reap ultimate results if constructed 100% accurately and tuned to suit tastes. despite my skeptiscism.

I am now going to have a professionally fabricated ported box made instead of the sealed box that i always thought i was going to get. if you are getting the box made professionally go for the port. dirol.gif

Why on earth would you want to play 5Hz?

Virtually nothing is recorded below 40Hz. Talk to some professional audio engineers, they'll tell you.

Even movie soundtracks only use 40Hz and above for explosions etc as this frequency has more impact than say 30Hz.

Play a CD directly onto an RTA, you'll see exactly what I mean.

i posted in another thread about this, there are alot of songs that go way below 20hz, there was an artical in a australian home audio mag that listed 50 odd songs that had music below 20hz,
grab a bass mechanik cd and jump in a car that has amp witha subsonic filter, get someone to turn it on and off and you will see biggrin.gif

I prefer my ported box over my sealed for my IDMAX...

1.2cube sealed VS 2.5 ported (30hz)
