Alpine SPX-177A

From what I've heard they were the best with a RRP of $699. But this was to my ears, you may like something different.

I would go with focal polykevlars they are around 5-600 depending on where you get them, you could possibly get some second hand focal utopias for under $700. I am currently selling a bargain set of focal kevlars for 3-400 depending on what ppl offer... sound awesome I think they are better than the alpines, but thats jsut my opinion tongue.gif

Do a search this topic has been brought up countless number of times.
Also dont let others opinions clutter your head use ur ears to determine what sounds best to you and what suits your needs.

While I am all for people listening to them and making their own judgement, the whole idea of these questions is to offer advice from where we see the strengths as product owners. We shouldnt just palm them off with "find out yourself".

Having owned both Focal K2's and the SPX's. I would have to go with the Alpines. I much prefer the soft dome tweeter compared with the focal, and the crossover gives alot of tunning possibilities.

By all means, try for yourself, but I would reccomend the Alpine.

some good advice there for you smile.gif
The only thing that annoyed my about the K2's was that kind of harsh tweeter sound with some types of music, it depends what you are listening to i guess. The power that comes out of the focals offers better SQ at high levels, that is there advantage, true SQ I guess the Alpines are better at lower volume after a certain level the focals keep singing and the alpines drop off, it depends how loud you are going to have these going... good luck with your quest for he perfect SQ anyway !
~Sparkles~
i found that if you lower the cross over point for the focals and reduce the power going to the tweets then they loose their brightness. also another mate with some polyflex splits put a small piece of silk over his tweeter grills and the harsness has all but gone. but yeah the alpines have a nicer sound at lower levels but can be drowned out by subs very easily i found. just my opinion.
paddles
thats interesting about the piece of silk, will have to try it, I run the focals with the subs putting out around 130dB and they keep up fine, much to the dismay of my girlfriend in the passenger seat who cries when i put it past 100dB lol. For $700 mate seriously have a look on eBay you could have any set of splits that man has created!

Three brands come to mind....Focal, Alpine SPX and MB Quart....

all are great sounding speakers...I would suggest you audition all three and pick the ones YOU like the best

For $700 or less I'd be having a good hard look at DYNAUDIO's 2 way component sets.

my brother got his Morel hybid 6's for $500, i reckon thye sound awesome, way better than my focal 165v's, very smooth and musical tweeters.

Dont forget the new Alpine SPX-177Rs will be out shortly they look nice cant wait to hear them.

I have just heard a whole bunch of Splits. I thoght the Kicker SS56.2 was a bit to bright but with some mods to the EQ it brought it down a bit to nice listening level. I listened to the MB Quart Splits. Pretty sure they are the latest ones out and they were a nice clear sound but i thought it lacked a bit of midbass but was still very nice sounding. I didnt like it wen it played songs like Thunderstruck and A Long way to the Top. Im sure ppl have heard these songs. but i did like the sound of the CDT HD62 splits. Very nice sounding very clear and a very nice midbass. I tried all these out with these songs. Thunderstruck. Long way to the top. Left Outside alone. Breathe (prodigy) and Mein Herz Brent. And i did prefer the CDTs. So go have a listen for urself to these brands. Coz its true every1 does have different tastes. But at least people have given u some brands to go listen to and pick the best. Let us know wot u went with.

I have 6" 2way Pioneers on my back shelf, which have horn tweeters that too me are way to harsh so i got a piece of thin velvet offcut i found across the rear shelf and has made a big difference (not enough tho)

It's funny you mention that the Quarts lacked midbas, as we have a set in the demo board (Reference 6.5" splits) and they have the best midbass of any speaker I have on demo...they slaughter anything else I've got...period

Perhaps the ones you listened to were not set up correctly?

I admit the quarts has better midbass than more other splits i heard. Specially than the kicker. But like i said that was for me. I thught the HD splits had a better midbass than the quarts. But thats in my opinion. I shold have phrased that statement better.

Hi there...looking for good sq splits?

I'm selling my set of dynaudio 240 gt in excelent condition only for $600.

Brand new price is now $999.

And I reckon if you really looking for good sq splits don't choose anyother than Dynaudio.

Dynaudio still has best sound in speakers I've ever heard compare to others!

If you interested let me know and give your email address so I can send you the pics of it.

Btw you live in Perth?
I live in Perth too smile.gif

I second that

Also try Diamond Audio M6's or Hex's, another of my favourites.
HISPL
My vote is for Rainbow or Dynaudio.
Both very smooth natural speakers IMHO.
Depends what you like.
I have heard some people say the Dyns were flat and they prefered the livelyness of say MB Quarts.
Each to their own.
the_iano
Alpine 177As for sure. Never happier with my pair
Marlin
I reckon Dyns if you like Silk tweeters and Focals if you like Metal tweets just put a pair of utopia tweeters in my car and I can't say how much I love them sound awesome.
BlackRain
Just an addition to the metal vs silk dome thing...for my personal music tastes (a lot of trance and other fast stuff) I've found that metal dome tweeters work better. They're more 'in your face' which is what I'm looking for out of that type of music. Technically speaking, it may not be the best 'SQ'..but to me they sound more lively and give me the experience I want. Even on power ballads and stuff I prefer that in your face type of sound.

That said..for $700 you could probably get Focal K2P's. They retail for around $850 i think? street price will be well in the $7xx range..
I'd also recommend the MB Quart reference series, maybe some Boston Pro's and as mentioned before, the Alpines. They sound great, and for a retail price of $699 I haven't heard anything better (yet)...
Thewheelz
Noone likes AVI?

I have to agree that Dynaudio has a awesome sound as does Boston Pros but IMO i love the "alive" sound from the AVI EL series. about $700 from memory.

What amp are you going to us with them?
