SQL hehe..

I am thinking if the sub is going to play really low, will I need another midbass driver to feel the gap for front midrange and subwoofer?

Does a good SQ system need tweeter, midrange, midbass and sub?

Thanks
shiny_car
high quality door woofers can play pretty low to keep up with subs. but a lot will also depend on the installation. sound deadening the doors and sealing off large service holes, and quality baffles/pods will ensure the woofer works in a decent 'sealed' enclosure (obviously not totally leakproof).

whether you end up with a 3-way front stage depends on how you want your midrange and for practical reasons. a dedicated midrange can improve vocals in particular, and improve imaging/soundstaging when they are optimally angled and positioned. but this may be difficult to fit into some cars and depends how much custom work you want to be done.

of the splits you're considering and mentioned, i think the midbass has potential to be fine.

Let's say it's Focal Utopia 3 way component. It come with tweeter, midrange and woofer.

Am I right to say that, tweeter has the highest frequency response then to midrange and lowest woofer? Also is woofer also known as midbass driver?

I am abit lost with these terms.

Ultimately, I wish to listen to my system daily and dont' really want the sub to muffer the vocal part of the song all the time. So I might need something like a SQLLLLLLLLLLL system haha.

I really doubt the front door can fit another driver unless I place the speaker near my lap when the door is closed. LOL..

Oh also, if I decide to get a 3 way, can the woofer be placed at the rear (at the sides of the rear passenger? I read this book about building a 3 way panel with fiberglass, everything is cluster next to each other.

My friend told me it's not very good to seperate tweeter away from midranger driver more than 6 inches, but I have seen alot of photos of system build by professionals with tweeter fitting on the A pillar..

I need a SQ, SPL book for idiots

yes, sorry if i confused you. the 'woofer' or midbass driver is typically door-mounted.

i agree that it's good to avoid 'separation' issues by physically installing all drivers close to each other. otherwise you may notice treble coming from one spot and low frequencies from another; this creates a loss in imaging. but it's not always practical and may require more custom installation for a nice finish.

well, it's better to have the woofer up the front than in the door behind you, otherwise some sound will appear to come from behind. frequencies from ~100Hz upwards are 'directional', meaning your ears can locate where they originate from pretty easily (which is why subbass/below 100Hz is fine if it's from the boot cos your ears can't locate this so well).

what car is it?

Rainbow have been the best component speakers I have ever heard. biggrin.gif (That contain a tweeter) The midbass/midrange was very natural and yet detailed and the tweeters were out of this world, words can't really describe them.
I have heard the Reference series in Mo's car.
Very very nice.

Sorry, my bad.
I thought they were the Reference Series.
Anywho, probably the best splits I have heard to date.
sil21jun
By the way, I went to the MBquart website and compared the Premium and Reference series..

The difference I saw was the 1" and 3/4" tweeter ,and the crossover cut off frequencies, 2.5kHz and 4.2kHz.

Are those numbers very important?

Well a lower cut off frequency for the tweeter means you will have more music reproduced by the tweeter and less by the mid.

From what I understand this will allow you to create a stronger centre image as more of the directional frequencies are being reproduced by speakers (the tweeters) that can be easily positioned to give the best imaging/staging.

Having to mount 6" mids on axis can be a pain in the butt, mounting a 1 inch tweeter where you want is a cake walk in comparison.

I wish they were the Refs... but when those come in I'll be sure to try and organise a demo.

Thanks for the compliments smile.gif
