mmmmmmmmm Bostons...............
Some people lean towards them being a little too bright / harsh: I found that they were perfect with the tweeters mounted in custom door pods (low), but when I was forced to have them up at the corner of the A pillar they were, indeed a little forward.
Then again, that's what the tweeter attenuation switch is there for I guess: worked well for me!

I loved my Pro's when I had them and so did many others who heard them in my car.
I also agree with the tweeters being a little agressive sounding and perhaps that's why I didn't keep them for the next install. Still, a very nice set of speakers none the less.
I have no experience with the others you listed.

Among those 3 I'd pick the BA Pros too.

yeah I wish I had the chance to listen to them but I don't have many friends that are into car stereo + using such speakers. Furthermore I am not experienced to differentiate what's a good or bad sound so that's why I had to ask for opinions.
Maybe Sansui will sound good to me! :hehe:

dude, its worth learning about this sort of thing if you're really keen about your audio. there's no such thing as a good or bad sound... only what suits your tastes.
take a trip into your local "high-end" hi-fi store and get them to switch between a few sets of speakers. you'll find any hifi joint worth their salt will have a switch (nexus or similar) and you can listen to the difference in sound that speakers make. listen to cheap speakers and more expensive ones. A-B-C comparisons will help you to find the sort of sound you like and you'll be able to hear quite significat differences in sound between them all. have the salesman explain how to listen for differences too.
i've always recomended this to would-be purchasers of speakers/people who don't know what to listen for. you'll be able to tell, with your own ears, what sounds most like the real thing. are the voices natural or does it sound like they're singing into a pillow? does that kick-drum sound like a kick-drum or someone banging on pots and pans? do the cymbals shimmer and ring like you'd expect at a live gig? does that instrument sound "right"? .... you get my drift.
once all that's done, go out and listen to as many car speakers as you can. apply the same rules. listening to gear, home or car, is not hard. your ears are sensitive things, so it pays to find what they like. if you're forking out for new equipment, you should really buy what suits you best!
hope this helps...

Bodyjar, the Diamond Audio crossover looks very nice...compared to boston ones...
Did you say you go to UQ too?

I hate to sit on the fence but they're all good.
Get any..i honestly think it doesn't matter. they can all be set up differently to get close (but obviously not exact) to the same sound anyway (ie. head unit settings, crossovers, gain adjustments, mounting the tweeters high or low).
Go for the one that's cheapest or matches the rest of ur system..whatever...u won't be disappointed with any.

Oh by the way.. the Diamond Audio Hex series can have a combo with either silk or aluminum tweeter.. how do they differ?
Thanks

I haven't heard those particular MBQuart but have lots of experience with both the Boston Pros and Focal Kevlars. In my opinion, they are both outstanding two-way component speaker sets and you would not be disappointed with either, as they both sit amongst the best in the price category.
The Boston woofers have a nice 3-ohm advantage and are very punchy - yes the tweeter can be bright, but the same could also be said for the Focal TN52 tweeter. It's simply a matter of attenuation to solve this problem and both speakers sets feature adjustable crossovers.
I think it comes down to the music styles you most listen to.
If you like sassy, loud and live sound that's good for RnB, rock, metal, etc, go the Bostons.
If you like very neutral and articulate speakers that is excellent for live recordings, jazz, classical, rock also, etc, go the Focals
If you like dance or electronica, either would do.
I'd happily use both.
Whatever your choice, by narrowing it down to these two contenders among the dozens out there is a good start. They are both winners.
What sub are you getting/got?

Just went back to the Proseries manual, are you refering to the tweeter level, i.e. -4dB, -2dB and 0dB?
Bodyjar
Jun 18 2004, 10:53 AM
Yeah that what he means. Most crossover will have tweeter "attenuation" so you can bring the brightness down or up, whichever you prefer.

Jun 18 2004, 11:07 AM
Bodyjar, is your tweeter aluminum or silk?
I heard my friend's alpine splits and his tweeter is hell too sharp/pitchy for my taste..
I prefer RNB..not those trance or techno kind..
B00Mer
Jun 18 2004, 05:41 PM
Yes, as Bodyjar nicely reiterated, most good crossovers feature attenuation or tweeter level adjustment via either jumpers, dip switches or even different speaker terminals. This is usually in +-2 or 3db steps, with maybe 3 positions. eg., -3 / 0 / +3
Most metallic tweeters do appear brighter than silk as a very general rule, and both these sets do. However, they are both also exceptionally crisp and clear and play loudly as well.
With your taste in music and sub combo, I'd probably advise the Bostons, with at least 70-100W per channel, more if you can manage. Sure to sound good.
But really try to get a good listen to both if you can before buying. It's the only sure way. Your ears know what you like better than I do.

If you could demo all speakers at the one place behind black grille cloth so you couldnt see which speakers were playing 9 out of 10 people would pick the MB Quart Premiums. Listen with your own ears, not to other peoples opinions, they will only recommend what they sell or have in their own car. All of these speakers cost too much of your hard earned, do all of the listening tests.

Do you actually believe this or are you just doing your sales pitch for Rockford/MB Quart?
Everyone has their own taste, i dont think that comment is very true....

Who mentioned Rockford? Rockford have nothing to do with MB Quart...
I have done this in a retail sense, but it was about 10 years ago, it was more like 19 out of 20 customers would buy the MB Quarts. I believe that nothing has changed. The speaker I was selling back then (218.03) was $699, the same speaker exists today but is now the Discus DSE 216 for $399. I am just suggesting that people listen to a great European speaker brand that does not get much of a run on this forum before they make their decision on what to buy.

I thought I wouldn't have a clue about what sounds good. Then I actually went and listened to some speakers. I tried listening to some Fusion equipment and the sound from the tweeters felt like a bunch of knives stabbing me repeatedly in the ears. They are obviously geared more for SPL than for SQ.
