with speakers in front of you, is there a limit on how wide to how far away?
say if the speakers are 2m away from you should they be say 2m apart from each other?

As far and as wide as possible is the generall rule.

Sometimes you will find the centre image might get a little weak if the speakers are spaced too far apart.
Generally in the confined space of a vehicle's cabin this does not pose much of a threat.

with home audio setups there a optimum distance to the speakers and distance apart,
space them to far and you will get holes in the sound stage, but you could never get them to far apart in a car!
a similar thing happens with surround sound setups, like a simple 5.1 setup if you put the rear surrounds to far back there is a large gap between them and the fronts and as you play as sound that swings around you it will drop out as it goes from the front right etc to the rear right.

have to check with home audio people, but, i seem to remember that you should imagine an equal-sided triangle. with yourself, and the 2 speakers at the points.
