Full Version: Same power, active vs passive. Which is louder?

This is in the Audiophile forum because you guys are the only people running active.

Will active be louder with the same power?

If you have a passive 2way setup with one 2x100wrms and a active 2way setup running off two 2x100wrms amps. Which will be louder?

Theoretically there is twice as much amplification available to the active setup, but i dont know which will be louder.

The crossovers in the passive setup may use up a bit of power.

Has anyone who has used both setups, can they post their experience.

"The crossovers in the passive setup may use up a bit of power." If you are refering to the resistance of the crossover itself (I assume you are - as this is what will 'sap' your power), so to do active crossovers, however active does this at the pre amp stage, and may also have the bonus of having internal amplification to counter this.

In absolute dB terms, I think you will find a GOOD quality passive V's a GOOD quality active will have very little between them, which is unlikely to be audiable.

they will be a tiney bit louder, the passive xover will use some power.
but even if u are running a 2 x 100 wrms amp you are still giving each speaker (tweeter and mid) 100wrms, running active is just an expensive waste of power.
i would only recommend going active if it is only nessasary, i only went active because i had the amplification and the tweeters i was using diddent sound any good of the passive xover i had.

Thanks guys, that cleared things up.

My bit...the active systems I have heard have been more efficient (and therefore louder with the same power).
The catch is that due to them being more efficient, they have not needed the same size of amp and so a smaller one could be used. By smaller I mean in terms of physical size, power, thermal capacity, etc.

I've gone active for a number of reasons mainly efficiency and flexibility leading to better sound quality. The catch here is extra cost and time and basic+ knowledge needed to set the thing up just right.

Now, I should point out that this is based on my experience and study with home and professional audio and sound reinforcement.
It was not too long ago that I was asking similar questions regarding car audio myself.
