Full Version: Will response amp drag my system down?

Hey guys this is related to my other post in demo room but just another general sq question.

I have AVI EL-160 6.5", I currently have a response amp just sitting under my bed and i just wanna use that. I heard that the most important thing to sq out of the two(speakers and amps) are the speakers.

SInce i dont have a x-over im also thinking to buy a Zeuz x-over from the fs section. I dont thnk its a that good x-over however itll allow me to have 2 dedicated channels to the tweeters and 2 to the mids. on the x-over ill be able to remove the inline cap on the tweeter then just set the x-over to like 4khz and up for the tweets and about 80hz and up for the mids.

So two questions,:
Is this x-over a bad idea, should i just keep the cap on it? Its a 'F 2.2K PMT 250V'

and will the amp do me fine?. I dont have audiphile ears but i like clean sound and i think the speakers will do that fine with the response amp...

You would need to bandpass the mids. ie low pass them from 4Kish down and HP from 80 and so you would want a 3 way xover and a 2 way wont be suitable.

As for the amp, Im not a fan of them as I find the xovers arent V good IMO and am also suspect on longevity but if you have one and are going to get a suitable xover anyway then hook it up and judge for yourself.

Thanx for that, since i was gonna spend like extra money on the x-over etc, im thinking i may as well buy the crossover that comes with the splits. Didnt think it would be this much or a problem hehe.

However if i wanted to bandpass the mids, High pass at 80hz and low pass at 4k. How would i do that? Id have the elec. before the amp doing the high pass at 80 hz, then i would need an inductor i think it was to not let any freq. higher than 4k but everything else till the 80hz highpass.

Although you could build a passive filter to LP the output to spkr, I wouldnt recommend it. Passive will waste amp power as the output 9is being fitered and also you can adjust them and bascially have to rebuild them to raise or lower the xover point.

As an active xover goes before the amp you do not waste any power from the amp and also you can vary the xover point, which when doing this sort of thing is critical as its near impossible to pick what will work best by speculation.

Anyway it would be fsar easier to just buy the correct passive from the maker and then HP with amps inbuilt filter. This will not only be cheaper but will provide great results.

okay thanx!

So in most x-over boxes that the makers provide you with for the component set, is it just a low pass for mids, and high pass for tweeters so they blend in well? Then we run the mids as low as we'd like with the high pass or even full if you wanted.

since u have the amp, why not just wire it up and try it! see how u like it. the sound may suit some and not others smile.gif and if ur not happy, all the wires are already there so u can easily hook in a new amp!

yea i hooked it up last night and it sounds awesome, speakers are really nice!

But id prob want it a bit louder, these speakers are about 100wrms and the amps yea putting bout 45wrms-50wrms. Love cranking enigma smile.gif

Whats the sq diff. like when comparing say the response amp to a audison 2rx2 cause thats what im planning to get if i upgrade.
