Hey, im getting dyn esotars and they'll be run active, but not 100% sure on what midbass to go for. Im tossing up between the dyn 7 or 8 or another midbass you could suggest. But the prob is id prefer to go for the 8's but the esotars only play down to 2300hz and i dont think the 8's will play all the way up there and still sound good.

Any opinions or other options would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Tim

The Dyn Exotars can play down to 2000hz easily. And the 8inchers willplay up to 2000hz with ease.

Only problem is the Dyn 8inch MW170 Woofer has the biggest basket that willmake it very hard to install. its also 80mm deep which is getting up there, unless you do custom work.

The MW170 also has nearly double the linear displacement that the 7inch GT woofer has.

Another 8inch is the Morel woofers, they would be my choice over the dyns.

Fitting them wont be a prob as the doors are already built to accept 8" speakers so thats not an issue. And i think according to the dyn website the esotars only play down to 2300hz. In the dyn esotars 2 ways this is where they are crossed over and come with the 7"???

if you could find a place for a 4 to 5inch mid that might be a better option and use the midbass...well as a dedicated midbass driver :-)

the mw170 just as a midbass would be just awesome

one of the drivers i wanted to try with the esotars was the scanspeak 12M/4631G00 or 15M/4531K00. This setup would be great if you want a combination of active and passive. This drivers are ideal for a 6db/oct crossover due to their extended upper midrange frequency response and smooth rolloff. With 6db/oct on the low pass it is critical to have a woofer with a very smooth rolloff characteristics which is usually exhibited by paper coned drivers with small cones 5 1/4 and smaller. People with focal seas (excell or car drivers), metal coned drivers, kevlar or drivers with phase lugs require eq'ing/notch filtering or steep crossovers to achieve a good tonal balance. Note you are going to use either scanspeak or dyn this 6db/oct will work perfectly unless you go above a 5 1/4 inch midrange unit. I definitely would use a higher slope with a 6inch or larger diameter drive unit.

a 6db/oct between the mid and the tweeter 4.7uf cap (i think thats value i used) on the tweeter i think is one way of going then active high pass on the mid and low pass/band pass on the midbass 120 to 200hz @ 12db/oct or greater.

the other option is a dome midrange unit. MD140/2 Midrange is available or yo could use the MW150 Woofer, but i think the dome is better than the 5inch mid.

the bottom line is that a 3way setup will truely make your esotar sound its best

good luck

Thanks jas,
Unfortunatly i dont think i got the room o go three way, alread gone down that path, but thanks for your help.

The beauty of a driver like the Dyn Esotar is that it plays so low you on't need to complicate things with an additional midrange.

A great two way is always better than a good three way. You have less complex crossovers, less phase issues, it's easier to locate the drivers in optimum locations etc etc

Be careful how much power you give an MW170 running in free air. I've used AP membrains in doors with much success.

Phil I'd like to know more about using AP with the MW170s
I'll start a new thread.

Phil "The beauty of a driver like the Dyn Esotar is that it plays so low you don't need to complicate things with an additional midrange"

no the beauty is in the fact that it CAN be used with a 6db/oct passive crossover. For a start its simply magic with this crossover design and sounds better than any other alignment i tried with a lot of different midrange drivers from vifa seas and scanspeak. Drivers ive tried with 6db/oct have been scanspeak tweeters and that was a distaster (for example the revelator dome tweeter requires a 12db/oct to make it sound listenable) and seas millenium tweeter (which have similar low resonance frequencies around 750Hz)

i love the esotar tweeter but its size really prohibits it for car use. The damn thing is bigger than my new midrange drivers!!!

i think i can suggest a solution remove the dash and make some nice pods in its place....might even fit a 3 way that way :-) that reminds me of that usa alpine demo car in the honda civic (the one before the mini demo so i assume 2003 demo car)

hmm what to do with the steering wheel, airconditioner, instrument cluster and other crap you might need :-)

unfortunately it looks like the mw170 will have to do.

Good luck with the install
