As the title suggests.

I want to know how the equivalent morel and dynaudio speakers/components stack up against each other.
Not really interested in the fulls systems, rather the individual tweeters.

I only ask because of the huge price differential on some items which I would have thought would have been simular
eg. Morel MT23 - $259 vs Dynaudio MD130 - $600
Morel Supremo - $729 vs Dynaudio Esotar - $1499

Is the price so different for good reason (the Dynaudios hang all over the Morels) or are the Dyns over-priced.

It would be good if any answers were primarily based on the SQ performance of the two, and before 65 of you all say it, yes I know the install is just as important as the speaker, and I know that a mid priced horn will beat both.
In a straight comparison though, SQ-wise which are the better tweeter (yes I know that there is more comparison between the Supremo and the MD130)

Just the help i do think he already knows that music being a personal thing.. yadda yadda yadda.
he is after your personal opinions from those whop have heard and reviewed one of both is even better.

Intersting to see how many people have an opinion on the MT23 vs Dyn.
I am not wanting to be a wise guy but I'll bet half the voters have never even seen a set of MT23 let alone heard them, there have only been 14 sets ever sold in Australia and I am unaware of one single set in a demo board !

I can't speak for Dyn, but we are the cheapest place in the world (that I know of) that sell Morel.

Morel Elate 6 for example are around $699 USD + 12% Tax = $782 USD that is approx $1,120 AUD.

They are sold in Australia for under $890 !

Supremo tweeters are another, $499.95 + 12% Tax = $559.94 USD in the USA, (approx $799 AUD), we sell for $729 in Australia.

But at the end of the day, if you don't like the sound of a speaker don't buy it!

I'm one of those 14 people with MT23's that I got with my Elate 6's a month or so ago.
Sadly, they're still not installed so I can't comment on the differences.
Sorry.

likewise, i can't comment on the specifics of tweets cos i haven't heard much in the way of morel.

the md130 is lovely and esotar orgasm-inducing though a PITA to mount.

i've never heard a car with dyns sound remotely bad, even with a less than ideal install.

then again i'm bias cos anything dyn makes me go all mushy inside.

I would love to hear the Escotar and the Supremo back to back?

If anyone has a set of both of these laying around and they need some help with a comparison test, i'm up for it.
mooingchicken
someone correct me if im wrong but arnt the esotars, hard to get a hold of? (might be thinking of something else though)

I have the MT23, i recon its great and would buy it again, but that being said i havnt listened to a whole lot of dyn's back to back. so cant really give a good comparison.

The esotars weren't hard to get a hold of 3 years ago...

i heard the mt23 over the weekend at caasq comp and they are a veyr nice tweet - airy sound, with just the right amount of 'sparkle', and plenty of detail

i think they are exceptionally well priced, considering their competition

i know i've heard the dyns too, but it was too long ago to comment accurately

hahaha, sucked into posting in an oldie....i blame mooingchicken!
~thematt~
Ive done extensive testing on the Esotec and Esotar, against the Supremo, but cant tell you anything about the MT23, because Ive never heard it.

You have to judge the speakers on Sound Quality and what you are wanting as a sound.

Forget the price issue it does not hold any weight in the matter what so ever as in Australia Morel is sold direct with no middle men, where as Dyn are not. (at this stage anyway)

I can trot out many reviews and awards for Morel saying they are the greatest just as I am sure Dyn could also. It is a personal preference.

Phils hit the nail on the head here, they are both exceptional speaker manufacturers, you really need to get out and have a listen to them.
The Esotar is one hell of a beast, but Morel do offer great bang for your buck.
Both have had good success in CAASQ competitions.

Heard 2 old system 240's running through two different custom crossovers and the stock crossover, they sound nice.

Also just yesterday in fact had a pair of dyn audience 52 se for demo in my house.

To be honest, even though they are lovely sets of speakers, while some say "refined" I'd like to think "overly rounded" in the top end (tweeters.)

Haven't yet had the pleasure of listening to the esotars

It is a matter of personal preference though, from my personal experience, I prefer ribbons and electro stats for tweeters.

From an sq perspective if you mean in imaging both will be dependent in install, if you mean what you think sounds better, then you really have to listen to them though. (I prefer the top end detail and "airyness" of my cheaper infinity bookshelfs then the audience 52 se for example.)

Esotar's are good, but I think they would be even better in a home audio system - where source and amplification can better match their extremely high standards.

When I ran my system from my NAD home audio preamp they sounded so good it wasn't funny...

read in the latest car audio and electronics-us based magazine- and he stated that the morels were better than the dyns, pretty sure it was from memory, im sure he would have a well respected and un diased opinion but personal prefferance will always vary which makes it so much fun to compare!

same as holden/chev or ford? but we wont go there! tongue.gif

This thread seemingly died long ago... but since it's been resurrected I'll add to the tiem capsule anyway!

I have heard the Elate's against the Dyn's however to be fair, this was a long time ago. I was still running $300 Morel Pulse at the time and had nowhere near the knowledge of audio I have now.

At the time I thought the Morel's has a nicer more airy top end, but the Dyn's has a more nautral and un-coloured midrange.

Also consider though that the Morel system was running upgraded Supremo tweets, not the standard MT-23's.

Remember also that back then, pricing between the two brands was much closer then it is now... the Dynudio System 240 set retailed at $999, and the Elate 6 set at $899. Phil is right in saying the the Morel's current prices here don't really reflect their general position relative to the Dyn's, because back then (and even currently overseas) the Morel's were/are priced very close to Dynaudio.

Recently, I haven't compared the two... but I have compared the Dynaudio System 242 to the Morel Supremo 6 set. Of these two sets, I perferred the Supremo set, however to be fair it's also more expensive by a fair margin. I found the Supremos to have a stronger mid-bass, and more transparent midrange as well as better tweeters. The Morel's weren't quite perfect, but I felt they were closer to it then the Dyn's.

Just checked the FHRX website, and the Morel Elate 6's are $826, and the DynAudio System 242 are $1099 - a not so insignificant difference of $273.
muzzy66
Ahh, Morels must have climbed in price again.

I remember some months back they were around $650ish for the Elate 6 set.

Have you had a listen to the Focal 165K2P's at all? It's probably becoming less of a secret lately that at the price point, I love these speakers to death smile.gif
Fhrx
Yeah they went up about a month ago Pete. smile.gif

IMO, they have been way under priced for a long time when compared to their competition from a performance point of view.

A classic example for not letting price indicate quality.

I just got my supremos in.
If your top line speakers will last u about 3 years till u upgrade, then just spend up big, theres no point skimping so just add $1 for every day u will keep them and put that on top of your existing 1k budget~ 1k +1.18k=YAY ..........cors

Moral needs a dealer in Brisbane so i can listen to the supremo's before i make my mind up on new front stage.
muzzy66
The Supremo's are quite a nice speaker. After a big side by side comparison between about 4 or 5 sets of speakers, I found the Supremo's to defiantely be one of the better ones.

I felt their biggest strength was their highs, which I'd say were the best of the group. While I did note a couple of flaws, they were all quite minor - there wasn't anything that really jumped out at me. Every one of the flaws could be fairly easilly fixed with a small amount of EQ.

My personal finishing on the day was:
1st: Oz Audio Matrix Elite
=2nd: Morel Supremo / Boston Z6
3rd: Hertz Mille
4th: Lotus Reference
5th: Dynaudio System 242

The Lotus I heard again later after wearing in (and in a larger room) and they sounded far, far better - probably would have slotted them up above the Hertz Mille. However, having not tested the other speakers in the same room on the same day, I don't want to consider that in my 'comparison' due to inconsistent testing.
